Review: (#1, C) The target of this film are Minecraft fans and there’s no visage more identifiable with the series than the creeper. That said, it’s overly simplistic and lacks intriguing details to anyone who isn’t already a fan.

(#2, C+) For fans of the game, the fuzzy little bee will be cuteness overload and perhaps even for non-fans but there’s a lot of empty space and not much here that will create broad appeal.

Review: (#1, C+) There are several images in the trailer that conjure up images in the minds of Minecraft fans, bringing in popular mobs like the creeper, piglins, colored-wool sheep, llamas and more but it only feels alive when the human figures aren’t in the scene. When it introduces the actors and they feel completely out of place, it also takes the viewers out of it. Jack Black looks terrible and Jason Mamoa seems to be trying too hard. Otherwise, the actors seem ok. We’ll have to see if we can get more out of subsequent trailers for the film.

(#2, C+) The number of Easter eggs these trailers try to throw in is a bit frustrating. Yes, it will please and engage the fans of the game but there’s little here that make the film seem like it’s a must-see event rather than something for fans to dominate one weekend and then fade into obscurity. The humor is also underwhelming, which makes things even less sure for that burst of opening success.

Oscar Prospects:

None.
