Review: There’s nothing exceptionally attractive about the poster. It’s Palme d’Or laurel doesn’t spruce up the image and without a better understanding of the film, the poster doesn’t make sense. If you had never heard of the film and didn’t know what Cannes’ prizes mean, then this poster would not draw you to the film. Even knowing that, I can’t say it’s particularly eye catching.
Trailer Rating: B-
Review: This espionage thriller looks like a combination of Munich and Lust, Caution. Whether that’s a fair comparison or not remains to be seen. There’s just not enough in the trailer to explain the situation or what the film will resolve to. That’s both good and bad. It keeps the audience curious, but doesn’t draw more than the art house crowd.
Oscar Prospects:
The film’s release in early 2008 will pretty much isolate it from any recognition outside of Best Foreign Language Film where it is Romania’s entry to the competition. There’s talk that it will make the cut, but some feel its dark subject matter might exclude it. From a win certainly, but not from a nomination, which seems almost assured at this point.
