Oscar Preview: Precursor Winners & Losers, Week 8
As the precursor awards continue unabated until Oscar night, I’m going to be providing a weekly update highlighting the films that have won and lost momentum through the precursor awards (and in some cases other outside influences). While there were a handful of precursors in the last week, including the important Directors Guild of America…

92nd Oscar Nominations
There were a lot of omissions and handful of unexpected results. Nine nominees in Best Picture and all but one of them received more than 5 nominations. Joker did exceptionally well, earning nominations in categories that weren’t exactly expected (see Costume Design). It was the top nominated film of the year, just like at BAFTA…

Precursor: 19th AARP Movies for Grownups Awards (2019)
Nothing too surprising here, but it is odd that they didn’t announce the winner of the Best Buddy Picture award. Award Tallies (2) A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood, The Irishman, Marriage Story The Awards
-
Precursor: 25th Broadcast Critics Awards (2019)
Going in an entirely different direction than most other precursors, the Broadcast Film Critics Association has thrown a few wrenches into the gear works. That said, their Best Picture and Best Production Design selections were the only unexpected choices. Otherwise, they spread the love and no one really knows how this will impact anything. Award…

Precursor: 11th Make-Up Artists Guild Awards (2019)
Bombshell wiped the floor with the competition, winning prizes in every category it was nominated in. Rocketman was surprisingly skipped entirely and Joker, expectedly, and Downton Abbey, interestingly, were the other winners. Award Tallies (3) Bombshell The Awards

Oscar Morning: The Article (2019)
FOR AN OSCAR MORNING TRACKING SHEET, CLICK HERE. My predictions are in BOLD. It’s hard to know precisely how the Academy will handle this year’s announcements. We have the list of categories that will be announced and in which grouping, but we have no idea in what order they will be announced and we only…

Precursor: 17th Iowa Critics Awards (2019)
With both nominations and awards announced (the nominations may have been on Jan. 10 and the rest later, but I don’t know for sure since there’s not a lot of data out there outside of IMDb. They loved Once Upon a Time… and that’s all you can really say about them. Award Tallies (3) Once…

Precursor: 13th Women Journalists Awards (2019)
Parasite must be the film of the year if so many demographic-based critics groups selected it as the year’s top film. Though, there’s nothing really (new) to see here. Award Tallies (4) Little Women, Parasite The Awards

Oscar Morning: The Article **COMING SOON** (2019)
This is not a placeholder post, but a post letting you know that my annual Oscar Morning article will be forthcoming. Typically, I post it the day before the Oscar nominations, but that day is Sunday as for some strange reason, the Academy chose to announce nominations on Monday instead of the traditional Tuesday announcement.…

2019 Precursor Predictions: Make-Up Artists Guild
The Make-Up Artists and Hair-Stylists Guild give out awards in five categories. The hairstyling categories hardly ever mimic the Oscars, but the makeup categories, especially the special make-up effects category are the best representations of what could happen. The only selection we completely agreed on was Bombshell for contemporary make-up.

2019 Oscar Nominations Predictions: Final
As is our tradition, May begins our first predictive look at the year’s Oscar hopefuls. A lot of factors will play into how well our guesses hold up. Expect many of them to fall by the wayside as the year progresses and new contenders to rise into their places. It’s finally here. It feels like…

Precursor: 3rd Hollywood Critics Awards (2019)
The wheels of fortune are spinning in new directions as the season drags on. First, The Irishman was the clear frontrunner. Then Parasite. Now it’s 1917 and I suspect that might be the final trajectory for this year. That said, when a group picks Olivia Wilde for Best Director over Greta Gerwig, you have to…
