It’s time for another round of screeners. This time, we have one from Fox Searchlight (Birth of a Nation), two from Amazon Studios (Cafe Society and Love & Friendship), one from CBS Films (Hell or High Water), one from Sony Pictures (Sausage Party), and one from Roadside Attractions (Touched with Fire).

The Birth of a Nation

Oscar Chances: Poor: The big story of the year is how Nate Parker’s once-juggernaut became the year’s pariah. After rape charges surfaced against Parker, the film has become kryptonite for conscientious Academy voters. Many thought it was bound to be one of the year’s biggest winners, now it will be lucky to get nominations in the creative categories. It should also be noted that critics, while largely positive about the film, have largely declared it solid, but not great or daring.
Campaign-Proposed Categories:

  • Best Director (Nate Parker)
  • Best Original Screenplay (Nate Parker)
  • Best Actor (Nate Parker)

Cafe Society

Oscar Chances: Poor: While Woody Allen once earned nominations for writing each time out, his recognition has been few and far between since the new century began. Since this film didn’t perform well with critics, its chances were essentially destroyed.
Campaign-Proposed Categories:

  • Best Picture (Letty Aronson, Stephen Tenenbaum, Edward Walson)

Hell or High Water

Oscar Chances: Good: The film was one of the earliest hits with critics, so it could be a solid player with the Academy. While I don’t know that it will be a major Best Picture competitor, supporting actor Jeff Bridges and the screenplay have decent shots at nods.
