Synopsis:

From IMDb: “In the taut and tense thriller Money Monster, Lee Gates (George Clooney) is a bombastic TV personality whose popular financial network show has made him the money wiz of Wall Street. But after he hawks a high tech stock that mysteriously crashes, an irate investor (Jack O’Connell) takes Gates, his crew, and his ace producer Patty Fenn (Julia Roberts) hostage live on air. Unfolding in real time, Gates and Fenn must find a way to keep themselves alive while simultaneously uncovering the truth behind a tangle of big money lies.”

Review: (#1) It’s always interesting when a concept not only works, but it’s taken in a compelling direction. This poster not only uses an interesting color bar motif, it also employs a sort of split screen that isn’t equally balanced, making it feel off-kilter, but ultimately fitting. (#2-#5) While the first design uses the color bars suitably well, the remaining three character posters are a bit more interesting, splitting the actors convincingly on the screen. For those who are familiar with older televisions and rolling images, these add quite a thrilling layer of intrigue.

(#6) I was once fascinated with this diagonal motif, but poster designers have been so insistent on its use in the last few years that it’s lost all semblance of inventiveness. (#7) This does a better job of creating uneven images like the first design, but they are so haphazardly laid out that they ultimately don’t fit that well together.

Review: When you have talents like George Clooney, Julia Roberts and Jodie Foster (behind the camera) involved, you know it needs to be extra special to truly appeal. This trailer does just that setting up a compelling narrative that audiences can relate to.

Oscar Prospects:

Jodie Foster hasn’t directed a major Oscar contender to date, but the combination of star power and important subject matter could be a perfect combination of factors to lead to major Oscar consideration.
