Review: (#1) Those familiar with the franchise might be sufficiently teased by this poster; however, even fans aren’t likely to be that excited as a result.

(#2) The first traditional poster design isn’t that impressive, but sells the film just as it knows how: to fans of the series. (#3-#4) An interesting attempt at trying something different, but without impressive success. (#5-#9) Unlike the character posters from previous entries in the series, these are light and limited, giving faint hints on the stars without providing visual originality or successful detail.

(#10) It’s pretty, but I don’t know that it’s effective. What is the symbolic nature of the partially lighted stairwell, a sense of enlightenment? A sense of a situation spiraling out of control? That lack of information, especially in terms of character placement isn’t very helpful. (#11-#15) Simple, but generic character posters that highlight the purity that’s being discussed in the trailer, but which isn’t, by itself, very interesting.

(#16) Another design whose thematic or symbolic representation is carefully hidden and ultimately unfulfilling. (#17) No real symbolism to get in the way of the design’s appreciation, it’s a chaotic landscape that draws one’s attention without confusing it. (#18) An artistic design that lacks substance or purpose, which doesn’t make for a very interesting visual display.

Review: (#1) At the end of the prior film, it suggested the people of the city were already pouring out of the walled community, but this trailer suggests none of that has happened yet and that our heroes will be exploring the outside world beforehand. It’s hard to know exactly what’s going on, but unless you are familiar with the prior films, or the books, this trailer isn’t going to convince you to give a watch.

(#2) While the first film established what’s beyond the walls, this trailer ratchets up the tension and sets the stage for an appropriate and fitting continuation of the series. Whether it’s ultimately successful remains to be seen, but they are doing a fine job of selling the film to the intended audience.

(#3) A more rigorously entertaining trailer than the prior two, this one doesn’t quite dig into the depths of the setting very well and eliminates most of the major threats to the characters’ existence. It gains and loses in equal measure.

(#4) There has been no change to the stakes depicted in this film, but the trailer does plenty to create action excitement and interest in those who are already familiar with the franchise. Potential converts aren’t welcome.
