Synopsis:

From IMDb: “Lu and Feng are a devoted couple forced to separate when Lu is arrested and sent to a labor camp as a political prisoner during the Cultural Revolution. He finally returns home only to find that his beloved wife no longer remembers him.”

Poster Rating: C- / C / C+

Review: (#1) The small male figure at the base of the poster might be thematically appropriate, but the entire design is light on detail and color, which makes it easily forgettable. (#2) With a dash of faded color and more prominent figures, you have a design that does a much better job of engaging the audience even if it’s only briefly and not to encourage them to buy a ticket. (#3) Here’s where the artistry of Zhang Yimou comes in, the painterly brush stroke adds grace and passion, but the interior image just isn’t that compelling and also feels a bit cheaply theatrical.

Review: If it weren’t for the presence of Gong Li and Zhang Yimou, this film would look terribly milquetoast, a generic separation and rediscovery romantic drama. However, touches of Zhang’s gorgeous cinematography are peppered through the trailer and Gong looks particularly compelling in the film.
