Release Date:

September 16, 2016

Synopsis:

From IMDb: “CIA employee Edward Snowden leaks thousands of classified documents to the press.”

Poster Rating: B / C+ / C

Review: (#1) It isn’t the most compelling or original design, but as an artistic whole, it’s a strong design.

(#2) The level of background detail is laudatory, having a blank slate behind everything just isn’t appealing. That backing aside, this design just doesn’t have sufficient life or excitement. (#3) The French poster goes for the reflection in Snowden’s glasses, but that’s not sufficiently creative, its more like a crib from better designs.

Trailer Rating: C / B / B

Review: (#1) There are no scenes from the film, which makes it difficult to sell to mass audiences, but anyone familiar with Edward Snowden might find enough in this trailer to become intrigued by the possibilities.

(#2) Now that we’re closer to release, it’s good to see a more detailed trailer that sets the stakes and expectations and exceeds them. The only thing that might cause one pause is the rather unusual accent Joseph Gordon Levitt uses.

(#3) The last two trailers have been consistent in painting this as an important film that could reveal some fascinating details about the Snowden affair and what all went down behind the scenes.

Oscar Prospects:

Could Oliver Stone be back in the Oscar game after more than a decade’s absence? It’s possible, though his last few heavily political films have been disappointments. We’ll just have to wait to see what kind of reception the film gets.
