Synopsis:
From IMDb: “American chess champion Bobby Fischer prepares for a legendary match-up against Russian Boris Spassky.”
Poster Rating: B / D
Review: (#1) A fitting, pensive concept that works within the framework of the film, its subject and his state of mind.
(#2) Because audiences don’t get subtle symbolism, we must pound it into their heads in an oppressive manner. That it takes the same image from the more compelling first design and re-imagines it more drearily is a disappointment.
Trailer Rating: B-
Review: There’s a lot to look forward to, but the trailer doesn’t present a perfect concept of a film. It seems like it may get lost too much in making a statement or making Bobby Fischer out to be something more than he actually was, or perhaps less.
Oscar Prospects:
It’s hard to know if this film will be an Oscar contender or not. The concept, the execution and the performances look like they could be Oscar calibre, but we won’t know much until critics weigh in. And critics will have to be VERY supportive of the film for it to be a contender.
