From IMDb: “Gru is recruited by an organization to stop Scarlet Overkill, a super-villain who, alongside her inventor husband Herb, hatches a plot to take over the world.”
Poster: C / B- / C+ / C / C- / C / A- (10)
Review: (#1) It’s the standard teaser poster design for a Despicable Me movie except this time around these guys are the stars, which doesn’t make it that much more interesting.
(#2) An ominous poster that makes since after you’ve seen the new trailer, but not before. It’s clever for what it is.
(#3) A partial view of the villainess herself, but that’s not a particularly exciting prospect. (#4) Humorous certainly, but makes no real lasting impression. (#5) This one isn’t even close to funny, and although it sets the film in England, it doesn’t add anything measurable to the design. (#6) It’s a design that’s been used countless times for countless films, but that doesn’t make it a bad choice. (#7-#16) This series of ten individual designs takes the minions into some of the most iconic portraits in history, creating a unique and captivating set of designs.
Trailer: C+ / B-
Review: (#1) Some mildly humorous events, but this trailer is mostly fan service with minimal depth or intrigue, making it unlikely to appeal to any but the most devout minions fans.
(#2) The plot shines through in the lead-up to the film’s release. There’s plenty of humor fitting these small henchmen, which should easily help sell the somewhat less exceptional plot (it seems a lot closer to the first film than it probably should be).
Oscar Prospects:
While the Despicable Me franchise picked up its first Best Animated Feature nomination with its second outing, I wouldn’t expect much from a spin-off film.
