The Academy’s second announcement regarding eligible features this year comes for the Documentary Short Subject category. In 2013, the list arrived on Dec. 10. This time, it’s Dec. 20, ten days later. With the Foreign Language Film list only two days behind, it’s hard to extrapolate why this is the case. Based on past years, the Best Animated Feature and Animated Short Film shortlists will be next towards the beginning of November; followed by the Live-Action Short Film list in late November; the Documentary Feature set in early December; the Visual Effects bake-off list shortly thereafter; the Original Score and Makeup lists following closely; with the Original Song and Foreign Language Film shortlists following those up. This is all purely speculation based on last year’s announcements. Now to this one:

8 Doc Shorts On Oscarโ€™s 2014 Shortlist

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences today announced that the field of Documentary Short Subject contenders for the 87th Academy Awardsยฎ has been narrowed to eight films, of which three to five will earn Oscarยฎ nominations.

Voters from the Academyโ€™s Documentary Branch viewed this yearโ€™s 58 eligible entries and submitted their ballots to PricewaterhouseCoopers for tabulation.

The eight films are listed below in alphabetical order by title, with their production companies:

The 87th Academy Awards nominations will be announced live on Thursday, January 15, 2015, at 5:30 a.m. PT in the Academyโ€™s Samuel Goldwyn Theater.

The Oscarsยฎ will be held on Sunday, February 22, 2015, at the Dolby Theatreยฎ at Hollywood & Highland Centerยฎ in Hollywood, and will be televised live by the ABC Television Network. The Oscar presentation also will be televised live in more than 225 countries and territories worldwide.
