Poster: C / B- / C / C+ / C+ / B- / C+ / B- (4) / C+

Review: (#1) Teaser posters from Disney are so haphazardly simplistic that they prevent any marketing prowess. Those in the know will understand the purpose of the poster, but considering how much of the film is already in the can, something a bit more daring and visionary might be more appropriate.

(#2) While it’s true we’ve gone beyond teasers, this design seems surprisingly subdued for Disney who’s fond of making grand, overflowing designs for its films. This simplified design is eye-catching, but not exceptionally exciting.

(#3-#5) There isn’t a lot of variance to these designs. They all stick to the character designs and largely replicate the towering spire motif, which doesn’t give the audience much cause for caring to distinguish between them. (#8-#11) These character posters uses the same spire motif, but in a new way. Though, they could still have some more interesting background elements.

(#12) A simple progression of all other designs, which ultimately means derivative.

Trailer: B+ / A- / B+

Review: (#1) A pretty damned good tease of the film. Just enough visual pop to make the audience ooh and ahh, but not so much that their interest wanes before the film releases. It’s a nice balance and definitely makes it look like a film worth seeing.

(#2) This trailer quickly propels the film into must-see territory. While the teaser certainly whet our appetites, this trailer goes beyond that setting up an amazingly grand adventure that could easily make it the logical choice for The Incredibles director Brad Bird’s newest effort.

(#3) The adrenaline-fueled nature of these trailer designs should have on trouble putting butts in the seats. This latest focuses mostly on a single segment of the film that, in prior trailer, didn’t seem that eventful, but now looks like it could be a lot of fun.

Oscar Prospects:

Certainly to be a contender in many tech categories, it will be declared early as the film to beat for Best Visual Effects. While that might be the case, never bet against late-year arrivals.
