Synopsis:

From IMDb: “A young boy whose parents just divorced finds an unlikely friend and mentor in the misanthropic, bawdy, hedonistic, war veteran who lives next door.”

Poster: C / B (5)

Review: (#1) This poster blends into the background of all of the other indie comedy designs that have bombarded the marketplace for the last few years. That lack of distinctiveness won’t help, though the presence of familiar faces (Melissa McCarthy and Bill Murray) might.

(#2-#5) This four-part series applies a similar saintly motif that is used in very interesting ways. While they are intended to use background elements to make the individual characters seem saintly, only the basketball hoop feels like a natural, unaugmented design choice.

Trailer: B

Review: Naomi Watts doing an accent. Bill Murray being a dick. Melissa McCarthy playing it straight. Chris O’Dowd playing a priest. These four parts might make interesting films on their own, but combining them makes this seem like a film that could be either outrageously funny or incredibly tepid.

Oscar Prospects:

The Academy doesn’t love comedy, but with three Oscar nominees featured prominently in this comedic festival hit, there might be some underground support for the film, though I doubt much will come of it.
