We had one film release this past weekend with the potential for Oscar nominations.

Koyaanisqatsi has a reputation for being an evocative documentary that wasn’t well rewarded at the time of its release in 1982. Since then, director Godfrey Reggio has teamed with Phillip Glass on a handful of documentaries, each using music to evoke an emotional response from the audience. Their latest film is more simply titled and will undoubtedly be discussed throughout the year.
The big question is whether the Academy can get behind the film. Without words, I can’t imagine a lot of voters will be able to muster up much enthusiasm. There’s a new crop of documentarians in the Academy and depending on how they respond to its style, it could be a contender. Likewise, Glass has been long admired as a composer, most often recognized for his work on Koyaanisqatsi and the follow-up Powaqqatsi. Could he get a career nod for his work in the series? It’s far too early to tell. If the film starts walking away with prizes at the end of the year, perhaps.
