With two extra categories to compete in, it wouldn’t seem that Gravity would be able to turn one acting nomination into a commanding lead, but it did. Topping two bigger Oscar contenders, Gravity brought in 11 nominations (not including its one nomination for Best British Film) topping both 12 Years a Slave and American Hustle. Tied in second place, the two other Oscar leaders showed up in all the same categories except Hustle had one extra acting nomination in Best Actress and 12 Years got into the Best Original Music category.

Two big things to note: Captain Phillips performed far better than anyone would have expected, placing third in the overall vote tally. British films did better than they probably will at the Oscars, which includes Rush, Philomena and Saving Mr. Banks (and could also explain why Gravity had more support here). This marks a major turnaround for the BAFTA nominations, typically you’ll find one off-the-wall citation that has no Oscar hopes and while the Behind the Candelabra (ineligible because it was a TV movie in the United States, but a theatrical release in the U.K.) nominations might count, this is a far less British-centric list than they’ve put together in years.
