We had one film release this past weekend with the potential for Oscar nominations.
Herb & Dorothy 50×50
Without seeing the documentary short list, it’s impossible to tell what films will end up as Oscar nominees. However, a film like Herb & Dorothy 50×50 extols the virtues of artworks following two public-sector workers who spent decades collecting modern art and, as their final philanthropic act, donated 50 pieces to one lucky museum in each of the 50 U.S. states.
This is the follow up to another documentary called Herb & Dorothy which cataloged their collection of art. While I’m sure there will be duplicate footage, the trailer suggests a gentle, loving tale of two beautiful people sharing their appreciation of art with a new generation. While it’s not the political bombshell that seems to attract Oscar voters’ attentions these days, it could be a nice jolt of populism into their slate. The unfortunate part for the film is the original received universally great reviews. This sequel is receiving more mediocre reviews, so it could be hard to see it as much of a contender all things considered.
