Welcome to The Morning After, where I share with you what I’ve seen over the past week either in film or television. On the film side, if I have written a full length review already, I will post a link to that review. Otherwise, I’ll give a brief snippet of my thoughts on the film with a full review to follow at some point later. For television shows, seasons and what not, I’ll post individual comments here about each of them as I see fit.
So, here is what I watched this past week:
K-11
A look at life inside the segregated homosexual detention center at the Los Angeles jail where a record producer, accused of murdering the man who was sleeping with his wife, must make inroads within the dangerous and conflicted wasteland.
Goran Visnjic has his best role since leaving E.R. at the end of that series’ run. Apart from appearing in the Oscar nominated Beginners, Visnjic has been stuck taking on small parts in small films with a few recurring roles on television. K-11 is no different than his recent output, but his charm and presence carry him through this film of intertwining subplots that tie up neatly at the end.
A full review will be posted at a later date.
Oblivion
Tom Cruise proves that he knows how to sell action characters in the big budget post-apocalyptic sci-fi adventure Oblivion from TRON: Legacy director Joseph Kosinski.
The film is visually stunning, but suffers from an unoriginal plot, copious amounts of theft from better films and an outstanding score that’s overproduced and pounding when it doesn’t need to be. Kosinski handles the spectacle of the film well, but seems to prefer stealing his best bits from other films from the likes of Independence Day, Moon and, surprisingly, The English Patient.
