If the film is releasing on Labor Day weekend, it’s almost assured that the studio has no faith in its potential box office performance. Ostensibly the last free summer three-day weekend a lot of folks have before the fall, most butts won’t be in theater seats. Yet, there are four wide releasing hoping to take the former and re-reigning champ, Deadpool & Wolverine. Can they top $10 million? It’s doubtful. The only titles that could overcome the hazards of the weekend are 1992 and AfrAId, both of which might ride a horror high to a box office win, though it seems unlikely overall.

Wesley Lovell: While some of the actors might be interesting, none of the premise is.

Peter J. Patrick: Too violent for me.

Thomas La Tourrette: The Rodney King riots look to be the impetus of the story but then have little to do with it. It looks like an average Taken-style film.

Wesley Lovell: An interesting premise but a dull trailer.

Peter J. Patrick: Looks like a more intelligent horror film than most these days.

Thomas La Tourrette: The concept could be interesting but the trailer soon devolves into a typical horror style that does not seem that exciting or different.

Slingshot

Wesley Lovell: A retread of so many other movies.

Peter J. Patrick: Seems to be a halfway decent sci-fi thriller.

Thomas La Tourrette: Again this sounds interesting but looked dull by the end of the trailer.

You Gotta Believe

Wesley Lovell: Now where have we seen this before?

Peter J. Patrick: Inspirational sports film based on real-life little league team looks like a decent little movie.

Thomas La Tourrette: It looks like every other child sports film out there.

The Limited Slate

Wesley Lovell: While I’m still intrigued by Megalopolis, early word hasn’t been as promising.

Peter J. Patrick: Megalopolis for Coppola, though I don’t really expect to like it. Tokyo Cowboy looks like a charmer and Across the River and Into the Trees for Liev Schreiber look to be the best of the remaining choices.

Thomas La Tourrette: Megalopolis is the most intriguing of the bunch, though I am not certain that it will be a successful movie. It is hard to totally discount a Francis Ford Coppola film. A couple of the others might be worth viewing if they get good reviews, but none of them stand out.
