This weekend’s sole wide release is a Hayao Miyazaki film, The Boy and the Heron. Miyazaki’s films, though popular, have never been so at the box office, so a top ten placement is even questionable, though with so many bombs lately, it could make it anyway.

The Boy and the Heron
Wesley Lovell: I love Hayao Miyazaki, though I hate that he keeps threatening retirement and doesn’t.
Peter J. Patrick: The frontrunner for this year’s Best Animated Feature is must-see entertainment.
Thomas La Tourrette: This sure-to-be-Oscar-nominated film by acclaimed director Hiyao Miyazaki is something to look forward to.

The Limited Slate
Wesley Lovell: Poor Things is a sure thing, but Origin, Our Son, and Three Muskteers have potential.
Peter J. Patrick: Saving the best for last? Lots of strong late-year openings here, although Waitress, like Hamilton, is a filmed version of a Broadway production.
Thomas La Tourrette: Poor Things is the one film of these that I am looking forward to. I have not been overwhelmed by the director’s previous films, but the critics rave about this fantasy. I will see Waitress just to see Sara Bareillis’ performance in the mediocre musical. Origin and Our Son have possibilities, but so far I am not sold on either of them.
