After the disappointing opening of The Marvels, it seems clear that this week’s number one film is likely to be one of either The Hunger Games sequel or the Trolls sequel. The other two films aren’t likely to have much of an impact.

The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes

Wesley Lovell: I love the original quadrilogy as well as the novels on which they were based. I haven’t finished the novel on the prequel yet, but it’s good so far. That said, early buzz is that the movie is terrible, so I’m torn.

Peter J. Patrick: This is yet another franchise that has overstayed its welcome as far as I’m concerned.

Thomas La Tourrette: I thought this would be interesting, but the reviews are so incredibly mixed that I am unsure of it now. I also wondered if it could pull off a couple of nominations for visual effects, makeup & hairstyling or costume design, but probably not.

Next Goal Wins

Wesley Lovell: While I generally enjoy everything Taika Waititi does, this one looks a bit too derivative.

Peter J. Patrick: Offbeat sports comedy may be fun.

Thomas La Tourrette: This looks to be a feel good pick about the worst national soccer team. It probably will not be more than cute, but that is okay every once in awhile.

Thanksgiving

Wesley Lovell: It’s about time Thanksgiving got another horror film, but this doesn’t look to be worthy.

Peter J. Patrick: I’m not big on horror movies set in holidays other than Halloween.

Thomas La Tourrette: Another horror movie that I can miss.

Trolls Band Together

Wesley Lovell: I enjoyed both of the prior films, so I’m on board for this one, though I’m not sure it looks that good in general.

Peter J. Patrick: They can band together without me.

Thomas La Tourrette: I saw the first Trolls movie, and have no real desire to see any more.

LIMITED RELEASES
FALLEN LEAVES	MAY DECEMBER	SALTBURN

The Limited Slate

Wesley Lovell: Everyone involved with May December and Saltburn make their films worth seeing.

Peter J. Patrick: Fallen Leaves looks charming, but May December and Saltburn are heavily promoted must-sees so I will see those two first.

Thomas La Tourrette: They all look good. I adored Emerald Fennel’s first film, so will definitely give Saltburn a chance. I have had mixed feelings about Todd Haynes’ films in the past, but this one is said to boast great performances. Even Fallen Leaves, the Finnish entry for international feature looks interesting, though less so than the other two.
