Three new wide releases go up against the second weekend of Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. It’s likely that Ant-Man will stay atop the box office, but Cocaine Bear probably has the best chance at overcoming the other two, cancer seriocomedy My Happy Ending and Christian-themed Jesus Revolution.

Our Highest Rated Films: Juniper, Cocaine Bear

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): The trailer made me laugh and for something as absurd as this, that goes a long way.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Ray Liotta’s last film looks like a waste of his time and everyone else’s to me.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): I will admit the trailer made me laugh. Whether the full movie can be as good is a different matter, but it should attract an audience.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): It looks like a dull and rote pseudo-religious pompous effort.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): A look back at the evangelical revolution of the 1970s looks more than a little sappy.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): It could be an entertaining film about hippies and a church coming together, but I worry it will just be schmaltzy.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): I like the cast, but the trailer makes it seem a bit slight.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): End-of-life comedies require a certain level of delicacy that this one seems to lack.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): There have been other cancer related movies before, but this one seems sweet if not exceptional.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): This war drama doesn’t have a lot going for it.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Vietnam war movie filmed in Colombia doesn’t look very impressive.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): It has the makings of a good war movie but the specifics look haphazard and I did not really care about how it goes.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): A forgettable trailer suggests a forgettable film.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): The trailer for this frenetic so-called comedy made me dizzy, so no thank-you.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): For a film that bills itself as a comedy there were few laughs and it did not have people I care to spend time with. And a very bad title.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): Worth seeing for Charlotte Rampling, but perhaps not for any other reason.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Charlotte Rampling as an alcoholic grandmother in New Zealand is pure awards bait.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): Charlotte Rampling is always worth watching, but the trailer is merely so-so.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): It looks like a slightly deviant twist on Safety Not Guaranteed, but still feels lacking.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Bizarre comedy with a horrible title is not likely to grab much of an audience.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): The reviewers seem to like it but the trailer is odd and I just do not see where this film is going.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): I haven’t ever found a reason to watch the Luther productions, so it really isn’t appealing to me.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Idris Elba in film based on his long-running TV detective series should do well on Netflix.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): Having never seen the tv series, I do not have anything invested in this movie. Some of the action sequences look good but not enough to entice me to the theater to see it.
