The National Board of Review is usually the first major precursor to release their results, but were beaten to the punch by the New York Film Critics Circle. This year, they went a little more populist than they have in the past and chose Top Gun: Maverick, a Best Picture nomination contender that may now have zero chance at the Oscar with this group’s anemic track record to support it. Best Picture is one of the best categories with most of NBR’s winners going on to get a Best Picture nomination. However, in the last 25 years, only four films have won Best Picture at the Oscars as well: 1999’s American Beauty, 2007’s No Country for Old Men, 2008’s Slumdog Millionaire, and 2018’s Green Book. They aren’t the best predictors of winners, but they do decently with nomination matchups.
