Poster Rating: C; F

Review: It’s only moderately funny in that Agent 99 always showed up Maxwell Smart in the television series, but that’s as far as it goes. It is overly simplified and not as laugh-out-loud funny as the show once was.

Just another run-of-the-mill placeholder.

Trailer Rating: B; D+; D+; B-

Review: It doesn’t give away any of the film’s plot, but then again it’s only a teaser. Had the teaser ended with Steve Carell, whose impression of Don Adams leaves a lot to be desired, in the phone booth, it would have been best, but the makers went a little further to show more, already-canned shots from the film. From a different era of television history, perhaps we’ll get a film that’s more interesting. Though Dwayne Johnson’s presence in the film doesn’t exactly make the prospect likely.

The good karma the first trailer provided is all but lost in the second, which makes the film look like a knock off of Austin Powers. As an admirer of the original series, what is displayed in this trailer is so antithetical to the show’s original premise that I grow more disappointed the more I see of it.

There are times when a makeover doesn’t look like a makeover. This newest trailer is almost identical to the last and gives me no more hope as to the dwindling quality of big screen transfers.

Now we have a better understanding of the plot of the film. Matter of fact, I think I pretty much get the entire picture which, while make it a little more involving and a lot more likely to draw an audience, is one of my biggest peeves about trailermaking.

Oscar Prospects:

Nostalgia doesn’t pique the Academy’s interests, so don’t look for attention for Maxwell Smart.
