The Costume Design Oscar will likely be decided here with the guild selections, but that’s not always a guarantee.

COSTUME DESIGNERS GUILD AWARDS

Best Period Costume Design

Cruella (Peter, Thomas, RU:Wesley, RU:Tripp)
Cyrano
House of Gucci (RU:Peter)
Nightmare Alley (RU:Thomas)
West Side Story (Wesley, Tripp)

Wesley Lovell: When I first saw the trailer for Cruella, I proclaimed that it was the film to beat in Costume Design. Over time, the rest of the contenders have become known and it’s no longer a sure thing. Matter of fact, West Side Story seems much more likely to eclipse Cruella, thanks to the bountiful number of costumes, all of which are unique and perfectly fit to the various scenes. I still think Cruella a likely story, but Cyrano and Nightmare Alley also seem like potential upset candidates.
Peter J. Patrick: Cruella over House of Gucci in a close race.
Tripp Burton: I could honestly make a case for any of these five films winning, but I have a hunch that the bold colors of West Side Story prevail here.
Thomas LaTourette: All of these had memorable costumes, but I would give the edge to Cruella. If not, then perhaps the stunning period work of Nightmare Alley might surprise.

Best Sci-Fi/Fantasy Costume Design

Dune (Wesley, Peter, Tripp, Thomas)
The Green Knight (RU:Wesley, RU:Tripp, RU:Thomas)
The Matrix Resurrections
Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings
Spider-Man: No Way Home
The Suicide Squad (RU:Peter)

Wesley Lovell: There are only two candidates here that seem to fit the style the Costume Designers Guild likes to honor. Dune and The Green Knight. The modern Shang-Chi and Spider-Man feel like they have no shot and The Matrix Resurrections, whether fair or not, seems like old hat. The Suicide Squad could play spoiler, but I have a hard time seeing Dune being upset and if it is, I expect it to be The Green Knight and not The Suicide Squad.
Peter J. Patrick: The immensely popular Dune should win this easily.
Tripp Burton: Dune just keeps chugging along.
Thomas LaTourette: I would think Dune should win this easily, otherwise the medieval work of Green Knight.

Best Contemporary Costume Design

Coming 2 America (Wesley, Peter, Thomas)
Don’t Look Up
In the Heights (Tripp)
No Time to Die (RU:Wesley, RU:Thomas)
Zola (RU:Peter, RU:Tripp)

Wesley Lovell: Lots of costumes abound here, but the exotic nature of the designs for Coming 2 America seem a more likely choice than the other less exuberant selections.
Peter J. Patrick: Coming 2 America wins in a close race with Zola.
Tripp Burton: In the Heights seems like the safest bet here, but I have a strange hunch that Zola could surprise here.
Thomas LaTourette: Even though it was a silly movie, Coming 2 America has the most distinctive work, so I imagine it will win.
