This was the penultimate guild announcement today, with the Directors Guild of America still pending, but this is a hugely important one for any film wanting a Best Picture nomination at the Oscars. Usually, one blockbuster makes this list, but I don’t see Spider-Man: No Way Home, which many thought would be this year’s biggest hit to make the list, which pretty much torpedoes its Oscar chances. What missed that could have benefited from a citation, but didn’t get it? Nightmare Alley and Cyrano are the most obvious failures, but the likes of The French Dispatch, The Green Knight, House of Gucci, The Lost Daughter, Mass, Passing, Pig, and Spencer all could have used the support. Drive My Car was also a huge exclusion. Parasite picked up this nomination, but Drive My Car didn’t, which means it’s not likely to be the next foreign language Best Picture nominee. Kudos to edge-nominees Being the Ricardos, CODA, Don’t Look Up, King Richard, and tick, tick…BOOM!. These nominations significantly boost their profiles going into Oscar voting.
