We had one film release this past weekend with the potential for Oscar nominations.

The Eyes of Tammy Faye

Before the film was released, the concept of a biopic about Jim and Tammy Faye Bakker seemed like an opportunity for a lot of awards consideration. Sure, Jessica Chastain was always the favored contender, but the film seemed like just the right kind of feature to bring director Michael Showalter, Chastain and Andrew Garfield some Oscar attention. Based on a documentary by Fenton Bailey and Randy Barbato, the film was pushed out from its original 2020 berth into 2021, which suggested they wanted to wait until audiences could see it. Then the release date was changed to September, which was the first real sign that the film was struggling.

While Oscar contenders are nominated for September releases, a lot of would-be contenders get dumped into the month as it makes it easier to forget the film as Oscar season ramps up at the end of the year. Then the reviewers got a hold of it and everything has crashed around it. While there’s still some chatter that Chastain will score an Oscar nomination for the film, little else about the film is competitive. That said, Best Makeup & Hairstyling for the notoriously overdone Tammy Faye could be a possibility as well.
