With the 27th SAG Awards nominations announced, we can now start to see whatever patterns there might be and see what Oscar might have in store. All of the major Best Picture Oscar contenders appear to be here, including three films with three nominations apiece. Nomadland and Promising Young Woman may have gotten Best Actress nominations, but both were left out of the cast category, though neither was a prime contender for that award. Some notable omissions: Delroy Lindo didn’t get a lead nomination and Ellen Burstyn wasn’t in supporting. Only one member of the One Night in Miami ensemble was nominated, making Kingsley Ben-Adir’s chances in lead evaporate. Chadwick Boseman got the double-nominations we all expect the Academy to replicate while Amy Adams made a surprise appearance in Best Actress. We could have to move that film back into contention in spite of its critical drubbing. Both actors being nominated for Minari improves their chances where similar actors in recent years couldn’t crack the case. Helena Zengel becomes a surprise supporting contender while Paul Raci is left out of the love for Sound of Metal. I’m sure there are some other major misses here, but I cannot think of them right this moment. Another dispiriting omission is Amanda Seyfried in Mank. Her performance was one of the few in the film that felt more alive and impressive than any of the others, including Oldman. I suspect Zengel pushed her out. More later.
