Synopsis:

From IMDb: “After draining his life savings to enter a team in the Rucker Classic street ball tournament in Harlem, Dax (Lil Rel Howery) is dealt a series of unfortunate setbacks, including losing his team to his longtime rival (Nick Kroll). Desperate to win the tournament and the cash prize, Dax stumbles upon the man, the myth, the legend UNCLE DREW (NBA All-Star Kyrie Irving) and convinces him to return to the court one more time. The two men embark on a road trip to round up Drew’s old basketball squad (Shaquille O’Neal, Chris Webber, Reggie Miller, Nate Robinson, and Lisa Leslie) and prove that a group of septuagenarians can still win the big one. After a successful five years as a fan-favorite digital episodic series, originally conceived by Pepsi, UNCLE DREW, will hit theaters June 29, 2018. UNCLE DREW is a Summit Entertainment release produced by Temple Hill in association with PepsiCo’s Creators League Studios.”

Review: (#1) An awful white background, a title and an old man playing basketball. If that’s your thing, this poster will work on you. (#2-#11) This series of character posters are designed to look like themed action figures with heads proportionally larger than their bodies. I can’t see how many would be that interested in these, especially with the white backdrop.

(#12) Caricatures of each character on a large design that reminds of posters from the 1970s, but without a sense of import. (#13) The backdrop is bold, but ugly. The foreground is both forced and posed without a sense that the cast really assembled for it.

(#14-#20) This series of character posters is a nice change of pace from what we usually see and while each adequately taglines and envisions the character, they all still feel rather plain and uninspiring.

Trailer Rating: D+ / C

Review: (#1) There is little appealing in this trailer. It looks more like a poor attempt at a Tyler Perry knock-off. There’s also almost no humor on display, which hurts this comedy a great deal.

(#2) With a better understanding of the story, we can see where things are headed. Whether that’s a positive direction or not depends on the audience. Some will be totally thrilled with the potential, others will find it a bit cheap.

Oscar Prospects:

None.
