The Academy has announced the 7 films that will make the basis for the category’s Best Makeup nominations:
District 9
Il Divo
The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus
Night at the Museum: Battle for the Smithsonian
The Road
Star Trek
The Young Victoria
For the most part, you can probably count on District 9 and The Imaginarium to make the final list. Star Trek might be an option, but I wonder if The Road might make more headway. Decisions…decisions.
One thing you have to remember about the makeup branch with the Academy is that it consists of hairstylists as well. That would explain why a film like Night at the Museum would get a nomination. However, when it comes down to votes, more often than not, it’s the prosthetic specialists that end up winning. There are rare occasions (such as Elizabeth) where the makeup is less showy than the hairstyles and thus end up winning. A good blend of both can also result in a win.
I didn’t know The Hours was disqualified for that. Huh. …Of course, one could make the argument that with the advancement of technology it’s going to get harder and harder to distinguish natural make-up from digital touch-up. The lines are all blurring.
Still, the counter to that is that digital touch-up should be put within the realm of visual effects and not make-up.
Some people thought Avatar should have been in the running for make-up, arguing that Cameron’s motion capture was good enough that it was really “digital make-up.” Found that interesting. Don’t know if I agree, though I do think that it was good enough to warrant the use of the phrase “performance capture” instead.
