As the precursor awards continue unabated until Oscar night, I’m going to be providing a weekly update highlighting the films that have won and lost momentum through the precursor awards (and in some cases other outside influences).
The last of the significant precursors announced this weekend, so this may well be the last time we have an idea of what the playing field is before next weekend’s Oscars.
But, before we get into this week’s winners and losers, let’s take a look at what’s coming up this week:
Week 15 (TUE-MON)
Tuesday, Mar. 7 – Academy Awards Voting Ends (Official)
Thursday, Mar. 9 – Casting Society (Awards) (Official)
Friday, Mar. 10 – South by Southwest Film Festival (Festival) (Official)
Friday, Mar. 10 – Publicists (Awards) (Official)
Friday, Mar. 10 – Japan Academy Prize (Japan) (Awards) (Unconfirmed)
Saturday, Mar. 11 – Razzies (Awards) (Official)
Sunday, Mar. 12 – Academy Awards (94th) (Official)
Big Winners
Everything Everywhere All at Once continues to dominate the precursors, winning several prizes from the remaining guilds this past weekend and leaving little doubt that it’s the film to beat.
Elvis has also been doing well picking up the American Society of Cinematographers prize, an award no one expected it to get. That means it could be on track to score three Oscars rather than the two that are currently in line.
Women Talking picked up the only two prizes that really matter, the Writers Guild of America trophy and the USC Scripter award. Those are the only two remaining to give us an idea of where it’s at in the Oscar race, but it didn’t face off against All Quiet on the Western Front, the film it has the most to worry about in Adapted Screenplay.
Top Gun: Maverick may not have won the ASC prize, but it did win at the Cinema Audio Society, which keeps it from looking like an absolute shut-out for its Oscar chances.
Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio won several guild awards that it wasn’t guaranteed to take (that CAS award was crucial). There’s almost no stopping the film now.
Big Losers
The Banshees of Inisherin is really the last of the losers. Everything’s fallen into a steady cadence and the only film that seems to not be gaining traction is The Banshees of Inisherin as it loses so many awards. Colin Farrell did pick up a couple more prizes, but Elvis is peaking at the wrong time for Farrell’s chances.
