As the precursor awards continue unabated until Oscar night, I’m going to be providing a weekly update highlighting the films that have won and lost momentum through the precursor awards (and in some cases other outside influences).

Only three groups have announced this past week, making it a rather slow one in terms of precursors. The American Cinema Editors came out with their afterthought list of the best edited films of the year, London’s critics announced their selections, and the Grammys, which were last night, are more of an afterthought than the ACE nominations.

But, before we get into this week’s winners and losers, let’s take a look at what’s coming up this week:

Week 9 (TUE-MON)

Thursday, Feb. 9 – Film Music Critics (Nominations) (Official)
Saturday, Feb. 11 – Make-Up Artists Guild (Awards) (Official)
Saturday, Feb. 11 – Goya Awards (Awards) (Official)
Saturday, Feb. 11 – Grande Premio do Cinema Brasileiro (Awards) (Unconfirmed)
Saturday, Feb. 11 – Satellites (Awards) (Official)
Sunday, Feb. 12 – Online Film & TV Association (Nominations) (Official)
Monday, Feb. 13 – Vancouver Critics (Awards) (Official)
Monday, Feb. 13 – Vancouver Critics – Canadian Awards (Awards) (Official)
Monday, Feb. 13 – Nominees Luncheon (Official)

Big Winners

Tรกr was cited at ACE, then it won big with London Critics, which would have showcased its strength heading into the Oscar nominations had they been announced prior to that.
The Banshees of Inisherin also had a good day with the London Critics after picking up an ACE nomination.
Triangle of Sadness would have seemed more obvious a Best Picture contender had ACE announced their selections beforehand.
All Quiet on the Western Front also would have further cemented its strength going into the Oscar nominations had ACE come before rather than after.

Big Losers

Everything Everywhere All at Once is the clear loser of the week. Although it picked up the expected ACE nomination, it was completely ignored by London critics, which flies in the face of all the other organizations giving out prizes this year.
The Grammys can’t really be considered a precursor since their eligibility period encompasses the latter quarter of the prior year’s Oscar window. That they went for Encanto so strongly, confirms their irrelevance this year.
