We are down to 20 films eligible for the Best Visual Effects category. The only major contenders that were absent from the list that I might have expected to make the shortlist are Pan and San Andreas. There are a lot of films with supporting visual effects on this list including Bridge of Spies, The Revenant and Spectre, but a most of the films are heavy on the CGI with the sole exception of Mad Max: Fury Road, which is entirely built on practical effects, which may guarantee its inclusion in the final five.
