Here we look at the upcoming month’s offerings.

March 3, 2023

Creed III

Premise: From IMDb: “After dominating the boxing world, Adonis has been thriving in his career and family life. When a childhood friend and former boxing prodigy resurfaces, the face off between former friends is more than just a fight.”
Box Office Prospects: $120 M
Expectations: Excellent. This series has been a strong box office performer as it’s the only thing out there like it. That shouldn’t change for the third entry.
Oscar Prospects: None.

65

Premise: From IMDb: “An astronaut crash lands on a mysterious planet only to discover he’s not alone.”
Box Office Prospects: $65 M
Expectations: Uncertain. Adam Driver isn’t a proven box office draw. He’s familiar to Star Wars fans, but will this prehistoric romp do much business without the Jurassic Park name? I am not optimistic.
Oscar Prospects: Uncertain. It could contend in Best Visual Effects, but 9 months is too long to maintain a chance.

Champions

Premise: From IMDb: “It centres on a basketball team training and competing in the Special Olympics under the guidance of an imperfect but dedicated coach Marcus.”
Box Office Prospects: $45 M
Expectations: Uncertain. While Bobby Farrelly can make movies that become hits, he’s not a certifiable box office leader, so don’t expect much from this feel-good comedy.
Oscar Prospects: None.

Scream VI

Premise: From IMDb: “In the next installment, the survivors of the Ghostface killings leave Woodsboro behind and start a fresh chapter in New York City.”
Box Office Prospects: $70 M
Expectations: Good. This franchise can coast a bit because it’s got built in popularity, but it’s never quite reached the zenith the original three films did. Switching it up to New York isn’t going to improve much.
Oscar Prospects: None.

Inside

Premise: From IMDb: “Nemo, a high-end art thief, is trapped in a New York penthouse after his heist doesn’t go as planned. Locked inside with nothing but priceless works of art, he must use all his cunning and invention to survive.”
Box Office Prospects: $35 M
Expectations: Weak. While it might have a chance at bringing in some horror fans who like gross-out features, but that’s not a terribly large group of people, so I cannot imagine this one doing that well.
Oscar Prospects: None.

Shazam! Fury of the Gods

Premise: From IMDb: “The film continues the story of teenage Billy Batson who, upon reciting the magic word “SHAZAM!” is transformed into his adult Super Hero alter ego, Shazam.”
Box Office Prospects: $150 M
Expectations: Good. The film follows the successful pandemic-era release of the original. It’s possible the film will do even better than that prior entry simply because there’s not a lot of stiff competition in cinemas right now.
Oscar Prospects: None.

John Wick: Chapter 4

Premise: From IMDb: “John Wick uncovers a path to defeating The High Table. But before he can earn his freedom, Wick must face off against a new enemy with powerful alliances across the globe and forces that turn old friends into foes.”
Box Office Prospects: $200 M
Expectations: Good. This series is drawing more and more adherents every release and has turned into a bona fide major franchise. Look for it to do well enough to possibly be the first $200 million grosser of 2023.
Oscar Prospects: None.

Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves

Premise: From IMDb: “A charming thief and a band of unlikely adventurers embark on an epic quest to retrieve a lost relic, but things go dangerously awry when they run afoul of the wrong people.”
Box Office Prospects: $60 M
Expectations: Uncertain. The first attempt at a D&D movie was a major flop, taking in just over $15 million and that was before it became as popular as it is now. That said, I can’t imagine the film’s going to draw too many non-D&D fans and younger ones might not find the concept that thrilling in this format.
Oscar Prospects: None.

A Good Person (Expanding)

Premise: From IMDb: “Follows Allison, whose life falls apart following her involvement in a fatal accident.”
Box Office Prospects: $15 M
Expectations: Uncertain. It has a promising cast, Florence Pugh and Morgan Freeman, but Zach Braff’s films have yet to be box office musclemen. Further, it’s starting with a modest platform release to develop good word of mouth, but that might not be enough.
Oscar Prospects: None.
