The leading guild for makeup artists and hairstylists is a poor indication of the Oscar competition, but interesting to look at nonetheless.

MAKE-UP ARTISTS & HAIR-STYLISTS GUILD AWARDS

Best Special Make-up Effects

The Batman (Thomas, RU:Peter, RU:Tripp)
Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (RU:Wesley)
Elvis
Roald Dahl’s Matilda the Musical
The Whale (Wesley, Peter, Tripp, RU:Thomas)

Wesley Lovell: The Whale seems like the odds-on favorite, but Black Panther: Wakanda Forever could play spoiler since it had more volume of makeup effects than The Whale or The Batman or Elvis did.
Peter J. Patrick: The Whale should take this one easily with The Batman a possible upset winner.
Tripp Burton: In the battle of the prosthetic obesity, I’m sticking with The Penguin and The Batman.
Thomas LaTourette: Since The Whale appears to be the Oscar front runner, I could see it succeeding here, even though it really has only one person in makeup, though it is full body and very effective. It is the filmโ€™s only nomination, so it might not show strong support for it. If they go a different direction, it could really go to anyone else and that might put the Oscar up for grabs.

Best Period and/or Character Make-up

Amsterdam
Babylon (Tripp, RU:Wesley, RU:Peter, RU:Thomas)
Blonde
Elvis (Wesley, Peter, Thomas, RU:Tripp)
Till

Wesley Lovell: Elvis had more volume than some of these options, but Amsterdam and Babylon have their fair share as well, just not as much prosthetic as Babylon, my choice for runner-up.
Peter J. Patrick: The flashy but popular Elvis is my guess here with Babylon a possible choice as well.
Tripp Burton: I’m assuming it is the one Oscar nominee in the bunch with Elvis, but Babylon may surprise us.
Thomas LaTourette: Babylon and Elvis cover the most years, which might make them front runners here, with the cast of thousands in Babylon probably in the lead.

Best Period and/or Character Hair Styling

Amsterdam (RU:Wesley)
Babylon (Tripp)
Blonde
Elvis (Wesley, Peter, Thomas)
The Woman King (RU:Peter, RU:Tripp, RU:Thomas)

Wesley Lovell: Elvis had tons of hair to work with and those wigs for Elvis at different ages and stages should triumph, though I wouldn’t count out Amsterdam, my runner-up choice, or The Woman King, which might win on sheer volume.
Peter J. Patrick: The constantly surprising EEAAO should win here easily. If there is an upset, The Batman would be as likely as anything else to take it.
Tripp Burton: There is one Oscar nominee in this bunch, so I am going to assume the prosthetics of The Penguin win out here.
Thomas LaTourette: Babylon has the largest group to do and is set over several years with changing styles, so it seems likely to win. I am putting The Woman King in second just because they got to do the most different things with hair than the others

Best Contemporary Make-up

The Batman (Wesley, Tripp, Thomas, RU:Peter)
Everything Everywhere All at Once (Peter, RU:Tripp)
The Menu
Nope
Spirited (RU:Wesley, RU:Thomas)

Wesley Lovell: The Batman has the most prosthetics, but Spirited has a large volume of characters to make-up. I also wouldn’t count out Everything Everywhere All at Once.
Peter J. Patrick: This should be another easy one for Elvis, with The Woman King a long shot upset winner.
Tripp Burton: I’m sticking with the Oscar nominated Elvis, but if they want to give justice to The Woman King, this might be a spot to do that.
Thomas LaTourette: The Batman has the most distinctive work, so I could see it prevailing. Its closest competitor would be Everything Everywhere.

Best Contemporary Hair Styling

The Batman (Tripp, RU:Thomas)
Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (Wesley, Thomas, RU:Tripp)
Everything Everywhere All at Once (Peter, RU:Wesley)
Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery (RU:Peter)
The Menu

Wesley Lovell: Black Panther: Wakanda Forever may well win on volume and complexity. I could also see Everything Everywhere All at Once having an outside shot.
Peter J. Patrick: Another easy one for EEAAO unless they want to spread the wealth and give it to Glass Onion or The Menu.
Tripp Burton: I have no idea here, but Black Panther sticks out.
Thomas LaTourette: This award often goes to an Oscar nominee for Makeup and Hairstyling, which means Batman and Black Panther have a leg up. I will go with The Batman just because it has more nominations overall.
