The first guild to present its awards for the year, the Make-Up Artists & Hair Stylists Guild link up with the Oscar category of Makeup & Hairstyling (naturally). Here are our predictions for the winners and runners-up for this weekend’s awards with commentary by three of our four contributors.

MAKE-UP ARTISTS & HAIR STYLISTS GUILD AWARDS

Best Special Make-up Effects

Coming 2 America (RU:Wesley, RU:Tripp, RU:Thomas)
Dune (Wesley, Peter, Tripp, Thomas)
The Eyes of Tammy Faye (RU:Peter)
House of Gucci
The Suicide Squad

Wesley Lovell: When it comes to special effects makeup, most bets would be on Dune, which features plenty in that regard. Of course, the myriad characters played by Eddie Murphy and Arsenio Hall in Coming 2 America could potentially factor in.
Peter J. Patrick: Dune has the most effects. The Eyes of Tammy Faye realistically captures the many faces of Tammy Faye.
Tripp Burton: No commentary provided.
Thomas LaTourette: With four of the five Oscar nominees here, it could go to any of them. Perhaps Dune will take it.

Best Period and/or Character Make-up

Being the Ricardos
Cruella (RU:Wesley, RU:Peter, RU:Tripp, RU:Thomas)
Dune (Wesley, Peter, Tripp, Thomas)
The Eyes of Tammy Faye
House of Gucci

Wesley Lovell: When it comes to period/character makeup, it’s sometimes best not to go for obvious, but for most. Dune‘s luck would have it that it probably has the most of all of these nominees, though I wouldn’t be surprised to see Cruella or The Eyes of Tammy Faye shock with wins.
Peter J. Patrick: If the emphasis is on period, then The Eyes of Tammy Faye should easily take this one as it fits its period like none other this year. House of Gucci does almost as well in this regard.
Tripp Burton: No commentary provided.
Thomas LaTourette: Once again four of the five nominees are here, and I will stick with Dune to win.

Best Period and/or Character Hair Styling

Being the Ricardos
Cruella (Wesley, Tripp, Thomas)
The Eyes of Tammy Faye (Peter, RU:Wesley, RU:Thomas)
House of Gucci (RU:Peter)
West Side Story (RU:Tripp)

Wesley Lovell: Hairstyling is another matter. Oftentimes, they look for creativity. While Dune‘s emphasis is in makeup, its hairstyling doesn’t really stand out against the likes of Cruella and The Eyes of Tammy Faye. That’s especially true when you consider this was the only eligible category it didn’t appear in. That said, Cruella has a lot of hair styles going for it and considering the creativeness of them all, I wouldn’t be shocked if it won, though I could imagine the immaculately coifed Tammy Faye could factor in.
Peter J. Patrick: Dune explores a futuristic universe that is also reminiscent of centuries past which could get it rewarded for its parallel depiction. Cruella‘s hair styles are ghastly fascinating so that should count for something.
Tripp Burton: No commentary provided.
Thomas LaTourette: This might go to House of Gucci, but I am thinking they may like Cruella better.

Best Contemporary Make-up

Black Widow
Coming 2 America (Wesley, Tripp, Thomas)
Don’t Look Up (Peter)
No Time to Die (RU:Peter)
The Suicide Squad (RU:Wesley, RU:Tripp, RU:Thomas)

Wesley Lovell: With Dune out of the way, Coming 2 America, which is the only film in this list other than The Suicide Squad to feature in the main race, is sure to have an easy path to victory, though since Suicide Squad won the Oscar, its follow up, The Suicide Squad could benefit.
Peter J. Patrick: Both Don’t Look Up and No Time to Die had numerous characters with distinctive looks which should make voting for them easy.
Tripp Burton: No commentary provided.
Thomas LaTourette: It seems more likely to go to one of these two, and I will go with the Oscar nominee.

Best Contemporary Hair Styling

Coming 2 America (Wesley, Thomas, RU:Peter)
In the Heights (Peter, RU:Tripp)
The Matrix Resurrections (Tripp)
No Time to Die
The Suicide Squad (RU:Wesley, RU:Thomas)

Wesley Lovell: The same that holds for the makeup category holds true for hairstyling where Coming 2 America and The Suicide Squad are facing off with little competition. Coming 2 America just has too much going for it, but watch out for James Gunn’s film and a sneaky vote split could put In the Heights into play.
Peter J. Patrick: In the Heights had a lot of people whose hair had to be styled which should count for something. Coming 2 America did as well.
Tripp Burton: No commentary provided.
Thomas LaTourette: Of the films Iโ€™ve seen, The Matrix Resurrections had the most interesting hair styles.
