The Costume Designers Guild will struggle to align with Oscar because they have been uncharacteristically inaccurate, matching only two nominees at the Oscars with at least one Oscar nominee (Little Women) more likely than any of these.

COSTUME DESIGNERS GUILD AWARDS

Best Period Costume Design

Dolemite Is My Name (RU:Thomas)
Downton Abbey
Jojo Rabbit (Peter, RU:Wesley, RU:Tripp)
Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood (Wesley, Tripp, RU:Peter)
Rocketman (Thomas)

Wesley Lovell: This is a tough category to predict because in a rare disagreement, only two Costume Designers Guild nominees carried over to the Oscars. That would normally put the pair (Once Upon a Time… and Jojo Rabbit) in the lead, but don’t count out Dolemite Is My Name, a film many thought would be on the Oscar list. While I want to pick it, I’m going to hedge my bets and go with Oscar nominee Once Upon a Time with Jojo Rabbit as runner-up.
Peter J. Patrick: Could be any of the nominees, but I’m going with Jojo Rabbit because it’s been a season of dark horses and this is about as dark a horse as you can find in a comedy.
Tripp Burton: This is probably between the two Oscar nominees in the category, and I am leaning towards the 1960s Los Angeles recreation. I wouldn’t be surprised to see the similar Dolemite pull out a surprise win here, though.
Thomas LaTourette: Any of these could win, and as they are so radically different than each other, it is hard to predict. I will guess Rocketman, though Dolemite might sneak in. Or the Oscar-nominated Jojo Rabbit.

Best Fantasy Costume Design

Aladdin (Peter, Tripp, Thomas, RU:Wesley)
Avengers: Endgame
Captain Marvel (RU:Thomas)
Maleficent: Mistress of Evil (Wesley, RU:Tripp)
Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker (RU:Peter)

Wesley Lovell: No Oscar nominees to choose from against one film set relatively recently, one set in the present and near-future, one set in a far away galaxy, and two that are fantastical, but have designs out of fairy tales. In this case, it’s probably going to be one of the fairy tale selections. I’m leaning towards Maleficent, but it could be Aladdin as well.
Peter J. Patrick: I have no idea how they’ll vote, but the costumes in Aladdin were quite memorable.
Tripp Burton: I have no idea what voters will go for here, so I will guess that the recreation of Aladdin‘s mid-east look will win here. Has anyone pointed out that this entire lineup is Disney funded? (Editor’s Note: I did.)
Thomas LaTourette: The Disney films have the most elaborate costumes, so I will expect one of them to win. The original Maleficent did not win this category, so I will give the edge to Aladdin. Captain Marvel could surprise, but both Star Wars and Avengers movies have been passed over in the past.

Best Contemporary Costume Design

A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood (RU:Peter)
Hustlers (Thomas, RU:Wesley, RU:Tripp)
Knives Out (Wesley, Peter, Tripp, RU:Thomas)
The Laundromat
Queen & Slim

Wesley Lovell: This is a rough category as there’s Knives Out and then there’s everyone else. The film had the most colorful and bountiful costumes, much like something that might have come from a modern-set Wes Anderson film. I think that might give it an edge. Otherwise, any of the others could do it.
Peter J. Patrick: Knives Out is quite stylish. That should count for something.
Tripp Burton: This is a fun lineup, but I will guess that the stylized world of Knives Out (and its woolen sweater) beats out the sexy stripper thongs and furs of Hustlers.
Thomas LaTourette: Of the films I’ve seen in this category, Hustlers has the most inventive, so I could see it winning.
