The Art Directors Guild has three categories that they’ll reveal at their private ceremony Saturday night. One of the three winners is likely to repeat at the Occars.

ART DIRECTORS GUILD AWARDS

Best Period Art Direction

Cafe Society
Fences
Hacksaw Ridge (RU:Tripp)
Hail, Caesar! (Wesley, Tripp, RU:Thomas)
Hidden Figures (Peter, Thomas, RU:Wesley)
Jackie (RU:Peter)

Wesley Lovell: It is exceedingly rare for the Period category at the ADG not to feature three or more Oscar nominees. This year, only one film is on this list: Hail, Caesar!. I would be surprised if they didn’t go that direction, but it’s possible Hidden Figures or Jackie could triumph, though I’m not certain they can.
Peter J. Patrick: Momentum favors the NASA reproduction of Hidden Figures, but the exquisite recreation of the Kennedy White House in Jackie could upset.
Tripp Burton: Hail, Caesar is the only Oscar nominee on this roster, rare for period films, and should win handily here. There are a lot of better-liked films on the list, though, so don’t be surprised to see an upset.
Thomas LaTourette: I think the Best Picture nominee Hidden Figures stands the best chance to win here.

Best Fantasy Art Direction

Arrival (RU:Tripp)
Doctor Strange (Peter, Thomas)
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them (Wesley, Tripp, RU:Peter, RU:Thomas)
Passengers (RU:Wesley)
Rogue One

Wesley Lovell: Three of this year’s Oscar nominees come from the Fantasy category. You can likely toss from consideration the two films that didn’t make the Academy’s list: Doctor Strange and Rogue One. Of the two others, Arrival and Passengers are both science fiction while Fantastic Beasts, while set in the oft-recognized Harry Potter universe is, ostensibly, a period film set in 1920s New York. This fact and the sheer volume of detail in the film compared to the other contenders suggests it’s definitely the film to beat.
Peter J. Patrick: I think this will go to the audacious Doctor Strange, but either Fantastic Beasts or Rogue One could upset with a slight advantage to the originality of Fantastic Beasts.
Tripp Burton: This should be the most competitive award of the night, with three Oscar nominees duking it out. I will give the edge to the most expansive film, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, but Arrival could be a strong contender too.
Thomas LaTourette: Even though there are three Oscar nominees in this category, I think it might go to Doctor Strange as Inception won in this category a few years back. It will be a tight race.

Best Contemporary Art Direction

Hell or High Water
La La Land (Wesley, Peter, Tripp, Thomas)
Lion (RU:Peter)
Manchester by the Sea
Nocturnal Animals (RU:Wesley, RU:Tripp, RU:Thomas)

Wesley Lovell: As rare as it is for Period to feature fewer than three Oscar nominees, it’s even more rare for the Contemporary category to provide one of the Oscar nominees. La La Land is that nominee and it would be a shock if it didn’t pick up this prize, especially considering it’s currently the frontrunner for the Oscars.
Peter J. Patrick: La La Land would seem to have this one in the bag, but look out for the internationally popular Lion.
Tripp Burton: La La Land is the only Oscar nominee here, and this should be an easy award for it to pick up.
Thomas LaTourette: La La Land is the only Oscar nominee in this category and it should easily win.
