Saturday evening, all eyes are going to be on the Directors Guild of America. While some will be paying attention to the American Society of Cinematographers, most of those will be Oscar aficionados looking for Oscar hints. Below are our predictions for Saturday’s ASC event.

AMERICAN SOCIETY OF CINEMATOGRAPHERS AWARDS

Best Cinematography

Arrival – Bradford Young (RU:Tripp)
La La Land – Linus Sandgren (Wesley, Peter, Tripp, Thomas)
Lion – Greg Fraiser
Moonlight – James Laxton (RU:Peter)
Silence – Rodrigo Prieto (RU:Wesley, RU:Thomas)

Wesley Lovell: We’re at unprecedented saturation. Things are looking exceedingly good for La La Land to win. That doesn’t mean that it can’t lose. These are cinematographers, so they are much more likely to look beyond popularity to recognize the best of the year. That could mean that well known cinematographer Rodrigo Prieto takes the prize. So, too, could James Laxton for Moonlight, a film that has won a few precursors in this category and a lot of acclaim.
Peter J. Patrick: There’s no reason to think that the cinematographers will buck the trend and go against La La Land, but Moonlight could upset. A win for anything else would be surprising.
Tripp Burton: This could be a wide-open race, and this is a good chance for La La Land to prove its dominance in this race. That seems a safe bet, but don’t count out Arrival or Moonlight.
Thomas LaTourette: The beautiful imagery of La La Land should help send it to a win here. Dancing on the freeway and in the sunset cannot have been easy to capture and the guild will honor that. Although Moonlight has the second most wins in this category, I am giving the runner-up spot to Silence which boasted some haunting imagery by Rodrigo Prieto.
