We have four new trailers today, including the first seen for the new Clint Eastwood film Hereafter along with the first trailers for Trigger and Down Terrace, plus the second for Nice Guy Johnny. Add to that a poster for Hatchet II and you have today’s update.

HEREAFTER

Plot Summary: A psychic who is able to communicate with the dead finds it hard to cope with his “gift” and sequesters himself from the world until the world needs him.
Release Date: October 22, 2010

Trailer

Poster

Rating: B+
Commentary: It’s a strong trailer. It gives enough information about the plot without revealing so much you feel you know what’s coming next. It doesn’t give us enough information to know what the quality of the film will be, but should suffice to draw an audience on the level of Gran Torino.
Rating: None
Commentary: I don’t review placeholders.

Oscar Chances: You should never count Clint Eastwood out of any race. Even when critics seem to have dismissed his films, he still manages to come back with a few nods. This film while not typical of what the Academy would favor does seem like it could have some elements that would appeal to them, including Matt Damon’s performance.

TRIGGER

Plot Summary: Two friends form a rock ‘n roll duo hoping to find success, but in doing so face tough challenges to their relationship.
Release Date: September 12, 2010

Trailer

Poster

Rating: B-
Commentary: The trailer’s biggest problem is lack of information. You get a small amount of detail, but it takes intense speculation to come up with the idea of the film. While it won’t confuse everyone, it may confuse enough to dent its potential sales.
Rating: C-
Commentary: The washed out quality of the black-and-white image paired with the obnoxious mottled pink title create a displeasing visual.

Oscar Chances: None.

NICE GUY JOHNNY, trailer #2

Plot Summary: Trying to make a better life for him and his fiancรฉe, Johnny travels to New York to interview and finds a potential new lover.
Release Date: October 26, 2010

Trailer

Poster

Rating: C+
Commentary: It could be an interesting character study of a lovable loser finding love or it could be a predictable indie romantic drama. The dialogue seems a bit forced in places and situations a bit too orthodox.

DOWN TERRACE

Plot Summary: Having just gotten out of prison, the head of a small time crime family must come to terms with the real life issues surrounding them.
Release Date: October 8, 2010

Trailer

Poster

Rating: C
Commentary: Outside of the very alarming and surprising closing scene of the trailer, much of what transpires is slow and painful to watch. There are kernels of inspiration mixed in, but not enough to appeal to the desired audience.
Rating: C+
Commentary: The fractured picture idea has been used many times in the past and more effectively. The choice of colors is probably the worst part of the poster, making for a design that’s difficult to look at and impossible to remember.

Oscar Chances: None.

HATCHET II, poster

Plot Summary: A sequel to 2006 slasher flick about a hatchet-wielding psycho in the Louisiana swamps.
Release Date: October 1, 2010

Hatchet II
Rating: C+
Commentary: It works for what it is, but a lack of richness or embellishment makes for an unmemorable finish.
