Five new trailers today: The Sicilian Girl, Smash His Camera, Louis, Faster and Prince of Broadway.

THE SICILIAN GIRL

Plot Summary: A young girl betrays her mafia family to avenge the murder of her father and brother.
Release Date: August 4, 2010

Trailer

Poster

Rating: B+
Commentary: It is the kind of story that is seldom told and being based on a true story lends credibility to a seemingly powerful tale. Although the trailer itself is a bit disjointed in places, it conveys enough positive sentiment towards the film as to accomplish its purpose.
Rating: C-
Commentary: After such a strong trailer, to have a rather lackluster poster is a bit dispiriting. Drawn and unappealing, the title swaths and colors are diverting and poorly chosen.

Oscar Chances: A Foreign Language Film nomination wouldn’t be at all surprising, though it needs to be submitted first.

SMASH HIS CAMERA

Plot Summary: The life story of photojournalist Ron Galella and his not-so-friendly intrusion on the private lives of celebrities.
Release Date: July 30, 2010

Trailer

Poster

Rating: B-
Commentary: Exploring the first amendment and how photojournalists can stretch it to fit their own aims is a fascinating subject for a documentary. The trailer makes this one look a bit like cardboard, but the information within could be fairly informative.
Rating: D+
Commentary: Using one of the photographers photographs is always a positive thing, but not embellishing it or adding depth with the bread-and-butter elements of poster (the names, title, etc.) just doesn’t work.

Oscar Chances: A possibility, but a remote one.

LOUIS

Plot Summary: A street urchin dreams of owning a snazzy new trumpet, but hasn’t the money to afford it, but finds his plans interrupted when he meets a young woman in need of help.
Release Date: August 25, 2010

Trailer

Poster

Rating: B-
Commentary: If you can’t tell a world class cinematographer worked on this, then you haven’t seen very much. The sumptuous visuals are plenty to encourage fans of such things to the theater, but being a silent film even accompanied by a live jazz ensemble, isn’t something are going to want to watch.
Rating: B+
Commentary: Although it’s somewhat chaotic, it is a beautiful, colorful extravaganza with plenty to see and is in perfect sync with the accompanying trailer.
Trailer Link: Apple Trailers
Oscar Chances: The format itself will likely make the entire production ineligible.

FASTER

Plot Summary: An ex-con seeks revenge against the man that betrayed him and his brother resulting in his brother’s death, but is pursued by both a cop and a hit man.
Release Date: November 24, 2010

Trailer

Poster

Rating: C
Commentary: The sermon that covers the length of this trailer is a bit problematic, while it doesn’t overwhelm the action, it’s a minor distraction. Of course the action is a distraction in itself.
Rating: None
Commentary: I don’t review placeholders.

Oscar Chances: None.

PRINCE OF BROADWAY

Plot Summary: A street hustler finds his way of life impacted when an ex of his brings him a child she claims is his and he must care for and raise the child despite his underground line of work.
Release Date: September 3, 2010

Trailer

Poster

Rating: C-
Commentary: It’s a confusing trailer that plays more like a documentary than a feature film. That is its main problem as it lays forth a plot that isn’t nearly as interesting as it wants to be.
Rating: C
Commentary: I get the purpose of the poster, but it’s not that appealing. It might suggest something to some aspects of the filmgoing public, but most will probably not give it more than a brief second glance.

Oscar Chances: None.
