We have an unusual array of trailers tonight. The new trailers are for Jackass 3D, The Winning Season, I Spit on Your Grave (trailer #2), Daniel & Ana and I Am Comic. In addition, there are several new posters: There are five for Centurion, one for Enemies of the People, Nanny McPhee Returns (poster #2) and Heartbreaker.

JACKASS 3D

Plot Summary: The third film adaptation of the popular MTV series Jackass takes itself into the third dimension.
Release Date: October 15, 2010

Trailer

Poster

Rating: B
Commentary: Mildly amusing with a few rather inventive stunts on display in the trailer. I probably still won’t watch it like I haven’t the previous ones, but I’m sure this will be just enough to pull all the myriad fans into the theater.
Rating: C-
Commentary: I give them credit for using the red/blue 3D glasses, but mostly it’s just a rehash of past posters.

Oscar Chances: None.

THE WINNING SEASON

Plot Summary: Faced with a ragtag girls basketball team, a desperate high school hires a disagreeable coach to whip them into shape.
Release Date: TBA

Trailer

Poster

Rating: B-
Commentary: Amusing enough, this trailer should work sufficiently on the targeted demographic and maybe even a few high school sports comedy fans and a small handful of zany comedy fans. It doesn’t look terribly deep and probably won’t be filled with more than just stereotypes of the genre, but it might be fun in a don’t-think-about-it kind of way.
Rating: C+
Commentary: Inventive, but lacking distinguishable detail. Although you can make out what each image around the ball is, they blend too quickly into the background of the poster, so at a distance it loses much of its impact.

Oscar Chances: None.

I SPIT ON YOUR GRAVE, trailer #2

Plot Summary: A remake of the 1978 horror film about a woman who seeks revenge against the four men who rape her.
Release Date: October 8, 2010

Trailer

Poster

Rating: B-
Commentary: It’s more expansive than the original trailer, which should help and it will most definitely appeal to the up-front weekend horror fans, but may draw a few more women and their dates to the theater than other similar features, though with so much blood and gore, it might not. And a bit of a misnomer is that it’s listed as being unrated, but according to IMDb, it’s been rated R. Maybe they’re prepping for the eventual unrated DVD release.

DANIEL & ANA

Plot Summary: The difficult and unusual relationship between two siblings is exacerbated when they are abducted at gun point.
Release Date: August 27, 2010

Trailer

Poster

Rating: B-
Commentary: The background music helps distract the audience from the fact that this film is subtitled, but mostly the fact that it’s a foreign language pic won’t easily escape most viewers. The images portray a story that may have some incredible depth, but is too often punctuated by strategic critic blurbs.
Rating: C-
Commentary: A bland, unexciting poster that won’t win too many admirers, which is the opposite of what a foreign ling poster needs to do.
Trailer Link: Apple Trailers
Oscar Chances: Despite being put together by the same producers as the Oscar-nominated Crime of Padre Amaro, I don’t know that this film will receive the same attention.

I AM COMIC

Plot Summary: Several prominent comedians discuss comedy and the art of being a comedian.
Release Date: August 20, 2010

Trailer

Poster

Rating: C+
Commentary: The idea itself is outstanding for a documentary. However, the trailer just goes on and on and on without much in the way of humor, which makes for a difficult sell when it’s supposed to be about comedians.
Rating: C-
Commentary: Fits but also feels pointless. Since there are more names than what is featured on the poster, one can’t help but be disappointed and upset if one’s favorite is not there. But looking at this poster, most people will probably think it’s an ad for a local stand-up comedy event, not a documentary.

Oscar Chances: None.

CENTURION, multiple posters

Plot Summary: In an assault on Britain, a regiment of Roman soldiers is nearly obliterated but for seven centurions commanded by their imprisoned general to return home by any means necessary.
Release Date: August 27, 2010

Trailer

Poster

Previous Preview:
Centurion
Rating: B-
Commentary: It’s not a staggeringly great achievement, but it’s a sufficient piece that should help attract an audience unfamiliar with the work. By focusing on the violence as such, it’s bound to be suitable for pulling people in.
Rating: B-
Commentary: The next triumvirate of posters depicts the three main characters of the film. It’s about as original as any other character-driven poster that’s ever been created, but they aren’t overly garish, they aren’t pointlessly stylized and they don’t seem like the artist is going out of the way to bring attention to it.
Rating: C
Commentary: It’s a nice enough poster, but why does a live-action film that’s not based on a graphic novel need a comic book-styled poster? I know that’s the demographic they are trying to appeal to, but the first poster is much better at approximating the type of advert that should work.

ENEMIES OF THE PEOPLE, poster

Plot Summary: The son of two victims of the Khmer Rouge massacres goes on a mission to find out why the genocide that plagued his country occurred from the mouths of those who perpetrated the crime.
Release Date: July 30, 2010

Trailer

Poster

Previous Preview:
Enemies of the People
Rating: C+
Commentary: A decent poster for a documentary, but not one of exceptional quality. It does convey the purpose of the film simply, but only to those already familiar with the documentary or the trailer.

NANNY MCPHEE RETURNS, poster #2

Plot Summary: A sequel to the popular children’s film about a hideous nanny and her magical powers that help transform the lives of the children in her care.
Release Date: August 20, 2010

Trailer

Poster

Previous Preview:
Nanny McPhee Returns
Rating: C
Commentary: And here we have the Nanny herself, wart and all with a lame tagline of “who’s your nanny?”. I think they had to add the cute pig to make it seem less frightening.

HEARTBREAKER, poster

Plot Summary: A father desperate to end his daughter’s engagement hires a professional heartbreaker to come between them, but ends up falling in love with her himself.
Release Date: September 10, 2010

Trailer

Poster

Previous Preview:
Heartbreaker
Rating: C
Commentary: It might appeal to a few people, but overall, this is a rather tepid poster without any smoldering temptation.
Trailer Link: Yahoo Movies Trailers
Oscar Chances: Probably not. Comedy in the foreign language competition doesn’t often work, so I doubt France would submit the film if it’s even eligible.
