Three new trailers today and one new poster. The new trailers are for the Edward Burns film Nice Guy Johnny, the sci-fi/horror/monster film Monsters and the Joaquin Phoenix documentary I’m Still Here. The new poster is for the Christina Aguilera flock Burlesque.

NICE GUY JOHNNY

Plot Summary: Trying to make a better life for him and his fiancรฉe, Johnny travels to New York to interview and finds a potential new lover.
Release Date: October 26, 2010

Trailer

Poster

Rating: B-
Commentary: I don’t love the music, but I don’t hate it either. The unfortunate lack of dialogue doesn’t invite much attention, but the images often say enough by themselves.
Rating: C+
Commentary: A little bland and unexciting. Needs something punchier to appeal to a broader demographic.

Oscar Chances: None.

MONSTERS

Plot Summary: After an NASA probe crash lands in Mexico, strange new lifeforms begin appearing and threaten to kill everyone they meet.
Release Date: October 29, 2010

Trailer

Poster

Rating: B-
Commentary: It’s definitely a strong trailer and will successfully appeal to the right demographics. And it even looks like a well shot film. However, there is no need to include a critic plaudit in your trailer when it’s only from Ain’t It Cool News.
Rating: B-
Commentary: While it has a nice color scheme and a well-chosen image, I can’t help but feel like they are simply trying to play off the whole District 9 phenomenon instead of trying for some bit of originality.

Oscar Chances: None.

I’M STILL HERE

Plot Summary: This documentary follows actor Joaquin Phoenix as he quits acting to pursue a career as a hip-hop artist.
Release Date: September 10, 2010

Trailer

Poster

Rating: C
Commentary: The narration is a bit over the top and while it’s meant to suggest that something in Phoenix’s path sets him on a journey of self-discovery, it seems a bit too pre-planned to me.
Rating: C-
Commentary: The fading lettering works more than the poster itself and relying on the disheveled look only exacerbates the problem that audiences already have lost interest in the strange goings on surrounding Phoenix.

Oscar Chances: None.

BURLESQUE, poster

Plot Summary: With dreams of making it in Los Angeles, a young woman finds her passion on the stage of a high class burlesque show.
Release Date: November 24, 2010

Poster

Previous Preview:
Burlesque
Rating: B
Commentary: I wish Christina Aguilera didn’t have her mouth open that way. It’s rather distracting because it just seems so strange. The rest of the poster though is eye-catching and thematic, so it should do well drawing an audience.
