Rating: B
Commentary: Overly simplified isn’t necessarily a great concept and while the design work is stellar, its lack of background detail make for a bland and easily forgettable design.
Rating: A
Commentary: Steve McQueen is a brilliant director and this appears to be his first period drama about a rather challenging subject. The trailer makes it look like the epic slave saga we didn’t realize we were interested in watching.

Oscar Chances: This will be one of the big contenders at this year’s Oscars. Director Steve McQueen has been building a strong reputation for himself and this tale of a free man forced to live as a slave should pluck the right Academy voter strings.
