Wesley Lovell: You would guess by the way the Make-Up Artists & Hair Stylists Guild awards went that Coming 2 America was way ahead in the race for the Oscar, but history doesn’t support that notion. That said, Dune did poorly with that group and it was once thought to be the frontrunner. Thinking about what was honored and what was nominated, Coming 2 America makes some modest amount of sense as a potential winner. It’s chock full of prosthetic makeup and that’s the kind of thing that might resonate with Oscar voters. We’ll have to see, but right now, this could well be one of the most tossy-uppy of categories right now.
Peter J. Patrick: The makeup and hairstyling for Jessica Chastain in her interpretation of Tammy Faye Bakker was the year’s most talked about and would make a good winner. Only Curella comes close in both categories.
Tripp Burton: The last few years have seen less of a connection to the Best Picture race and more on prosthetics, so this could be one tech race where Dune doesnโt play much of a factor. The real-life recreations of Tammy Faye will probably top the Make-Up Guild winner Coming 2 America.
Thomas La Tourrette: I had assumed that Dune would be the easy winner in this category, but with its not winning a single award from the guild, I am no longer sure of that. It does have a best picture nom, but that does not guarantee a win here anymore. It still might, but I am dubious of that happening. Even though Coming 2 America swept the guild awards, I find it hard to believe that the Academy will give the Oscar to such a stupid movie. The original was nominated but did not win in this category, and that was with the famed Rich Baker doing the work. I do not think House of Gucci stands a chance. That leaves Cruella and The Eyes of Tammy Faye. Of those two, I would give the edge to Tammy Faye because it had the more noticeable work. In a way, Coming 2 America did too, but it produced no other Oscar nominations. Tammy Faye now has the best actress favorite and having an acting nom has often helped a film win here. I will stick with Tammy Faye, though could see Cruella or Dune sneaking in for a win.
