For our twelfth Rundown article, we look at two of the primary aural categories. After the jump, you’ll find our winner and runner-up predictions for Best Sound Mixing and Best Sound Editing as well as general commentary about the race. Friday, we’ll cover long-form animation

Best Sound Mixing

Winner Predictions

  • 1917 (WL O) (PP O) (TB O) (TL O)
  • Ad Astra
  • Ford v Ferrari
  • Joker
  • Once Upon a Timeโ€ฆ in Hollywood

Runner-Up Predictions

  • Ford v Ferrari (WL O) (PP R) [New] (TB O) (TL O)

Wesley Lovell: This category and Sound Editing come down to two films that are really in competition to win. 1917 is the kind of war movie that often wins this award and Ford v Ferrari is the kind of loud, adrenaline rush that can win this award. I suppose the others have a chance, but not much of one.
Peter J. Patrick: The louder the better is the way they tend to vote for this one, so the winner should be 1917 with Ford v Ferrari its closest rival.
Tripp Burton: (no commentary provided)
Thomas La Tourrette: This will also come down to 1917 and Ford v Ferrari. The guild awarded Ford, but had not even nominated 1917, which would seem to give the edge to Ford. I could see it winning, but wonder if the Academy members will split their votes between sound mixing and sound editing. If they donโ€™t, then 1917 will win. They occasionally award different films, but often the sound mixing winner then is a music-based film, which is not the case here. It is becoming more common for films to win both awards and since 1917 is more likely to win the sound editing award, I will predict 1917 to win this too, but will not be surprised if it goes to Ford v Ferrari.

Best Sound Editing

Winner Predictions

  • 1917 (WL O) (PP O) (TB O) (TL O)
  • Ford v Ferrari
  • Joker
  • Once Upon a Timeโ€ฆ in Hollywood
  • Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker

Runner-Up Predictions

  • Ford v Ferrari (PP R) [New] (PP R) [New] (TB O) (TL O)

Wesley Lovell: with a 4-for-5 match to Sound Editing, the odd-man out should probably be ignored. Beyond that, we have the same competition as in Sound Mixing between the war film and the race car film and a seemingly obvious direction for it all to go.
Peter J. Patrick: They tend to vote for the same winner in both sound categories, so once again it’ll be 1917 with Ford v Ferrari its closest competition.
Tripp Burton: (no commentary provided)
Thomas La Tourrette: This really comes down to two films, 1917 and Ford v Ferrari. The guild split their awards with each one earning a major award, so that is no help in predicting. The sound work of Ford v Ferrari was exceptional, but I will give the edge to 1917. War films do well in this category, and I can easily see it winning the award. I do not see any of the other films having any chance. 1917 wins, but it will be close.
