Every week, I get several press releases, screening invitations and other notifications from a handful of studio contacts. While I won’t be sharing any information regarding my screening invites, some of the press releases might be of interest to my readers, so I thought I’d start sharing them in toto with all of you. These could include new image galleries for various films or important updates to upcoming releases from various smaller studios and art house production companies.

Press Release: The Apple Isle Seeking Fresh Film Produce for Breath of Fresh Air Film Festival

THE APPLE ISLE SEEKING FRESH FILM PRODUCE FOR BREATH OF FRESH AIR FILM FESTIVAL

The Tasmanian Breath of Fresh Air Film Festival (BOFA) is inviting filmmakers from all over Australia to submit entries to their BOFA Devil Short Film Competition.

Open to all resident Australian filmmakers, the BOFA Devil Short Film Competition is accepting short films that have been made anytime within the last five years and are less than 15 minutes in length.

Up to 30 short films will be selected for programming into the festival, screening before feature length films and documentaries to festival audiences at BOFA 2014. They will also receive a Selected in Competition certificate.

The lucky winner will receive $1000, a VIP BOFA Festival Pass and a hand-crafted glass BOFA Devil Award, designed and made by renowned Tasmanian master glassblower James Dodson.

Furthermore, the winner and other finalist short film makers will be publicly recognised at a special festival film industry presentation event held in the Tasmanian Design Centre on the Saturday afternoon of the festival (November 8 at 5:30pm).

Festival Director, Owen Tilbury, emphasised the rarity of the opportunity that BOFA offers short filmmaker finalists to network with other screen industry guests on a level playing field. โ€œThe BOFA Devil Awards function on the Saturday of the festival is the perfect chance for filmmakers, critics, judges and screen industry guests to mingle in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere.โ€ he said.

All short film makers whose films are selected for screening at BOFA 2014 will receive a BOFA Festival Pass to see 8 films of their choice.

In what is perhaps a world-first, the judges of the BOFA Devil Short Film Competition are being crowd-sourced through BOFAโ€™s You Be the (Short Film) Judge promotion. Applicants have started pouring in from all over the country and results have shown that those applying are not necessarily members of the film industry; they are simply die-hard film fans. This is just another example of BOFA Film Festival being agents of change and offering a โ€˜breath of fresh airโ€™ to the global film festival landscape.

Now in its fifth year, BOFA is Tasmaniaโ€™s only major annual film festival and will be held this year in Launceston from November 6-9, 2014.

Entries to the BOFA Devil Short Film Competition must be submitted through FilmFestivalLife at http://bofa.com.au/2014/competitions/ by Friday, August 1, 2014.

Competition details and conditions of entry are on the BOFA website at http://www.bofa.com.au.

Alison Thompsonโ€™s Sunray Films is selling the film in Cannes

CANNES (May 14, 2014) โ€“ Academy Award-winner Emma Thompson (Saving Mr. Banks, the Harry Potter series), and renowned actors Daniel Brรผhl (Rush, Inglourious Basterds), and Mark Rylance (The Other Boelyn Girl) have been confirmed to star in Vincent Pรฉrezโ€™s Alone in Berlin. X-Filmeโ€™s Stefan Arndt and Uwe Schott (Cloud Atlas, Amour), Master Movie’s Marco Pacchioni (Bluesbreaker, Bye Bye Blondie) are producing together with James Schamus (Brokeback Mountain, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon) with a screenplay written by Achim von Borries (Good Bye Lenin!) and Vincent Pรฉrez. Alone in Berlin will commence pre-production during the winter of 2014 in Germany.

Based on a true story, Hans Falladaโ€™s powerful and redemptive novel, written shortly after the Second World War describes a city paralyzed by fear. Otto and Anna Quangel are an ordinary couple living in a shabby apartment block in Berlin trying, like everyone else, to stay out of trouble under Nazi rule. But when their only child is killed fighting at the front, their loss propels them into an extraordinary act of resistance. They start to drop anonymous postcards all over the city attacking Hitler and his regime. If caught, it means certain execution. Soon their campaign comes to the attention of the Gestapo inspector, Escherich, and a murderous game of cat-and-mouse begins. But the game serves only to strengthen Otto and Annaโ€™s sense of purpose, and slowly their drab lives and marriage are transformed as they unite in their quiet but profound rebellionโ€ฆ

Joining the production team are Cinematographer Stรฉphan Fontaine (Rust and Bone, A Prophet), Editor Francois Gรฉdigier (On The Road) and Production Designer Jean-Vincent Puzos (Amour).

Stefan Arndt commented, โ€œWe are thrilled that Emma, Daniel, and Mark were immediately as fascinated as we are of this most suspenseful love story of all times. And itโ€™s a true story, bestselling 60 years after its first publication.

Marco Pacchioni said, โ€œitโ€™s been a long journey since I bought the rights to the novel with Vincent Pรฉrez seven years ago, I am happy to see so many great actors, producers and distributors join us on our adventure to bring this extraordinary work to the big screenโ€

Alison Thompson also commented: โ€Itโ€™s a delight and a privilege to be re-uniting once again with some of my old partners on the film version of this recently re-discovered 20th Century masterpiece. It couldnโ€™t be more worthy of a film adaption and weโ€™re looking forward to bringing it to audiences around the globe.โ€

Press Release: Sundance Selects Take North American Rights to “Last Weekend”

SUNDANCE SELECTS TAKES NORTH AMERICAN RIGHTS TO TOM DOLBY & TOM WILLIAMSโ€™ โ€œLAST WEEKENDโ€ STARRING PATRICIA CLARKSON

NEW YORK, NY (MAY 14, 2014) โ€“ Sundance Selects announced today that the company is acquiring North American rights to LAST WEEKEND, starring Academy Award nominee Patricia Clarkson. The film marks the directorial debut of Tom Dolby and Tom Williams, with an ensemble cast that includes Zachary Booth (KEEP THE LIGHTS ON), Chris Mulkey (โ€œTwin Peaksโ€), Joseph Cross (RUNNING WITH SCISSORS), Devon Graye (THE DISCOVERERS) and Jayma Mays (โ€œGleeโ€).

This is Patricia Clarksonโ€™s first leading role since the critically acclaimed CAIRO TIME (2009), which was distributed by Sundance Selects’ sister label, IFC Films.

LAST WEEKEND, which had its world premiere at this yearโ€™s San Francisco International Film Festival, will be released theatrically and on VOD later this summer.

The darkly comic action of LAST WEEKEND unfolds over the course of a long Labor Day weekend at Lake Tahoe, California. Celia Green (Patricia Clarkson) and her husband, Malcolm (Chris Mulkey), gather their two adult sons (Zachary Booth and Joseph Cross) and their partners for a rare vacation together. As the holiday begins, Celia finds herself torn between her historic estateโ€”and the past that it representsโ€”and her desire to move forward with her life. On Saturday morning, an accident threatens to unhinge Celiaโ€™s meticulously devised plans. Amidst this catastrophe, Celia must decide whether she is ready to let go of the house. LAST WEEKEND is a film about the end of an era for a familyโ€”and the steps we must often take in order to create new beginnings.

LAST WEEKEND was filmed at the historic 1929 Lake Tahoe estate that was the location of the 1951 Elizabeth Taylor and Montgomery Clift classic, A PLACE IN THE SUN.

Jonathan Sehring, President of Sundance Selects/IFC Films, said: โ€œTom Dolby and Tom Williams have crafted an exquisite and beautiful American drama. We couldnโ€™t be happier to work with them and to be back in business with the incomparable Patricia Clarkson.โ€

โ€œWe are thrilled to have the film distributed by Sundance Selects,โ€ said co-directors Dolby and Williams. โ€œViewers relate to this film in a very personal way and are often reminded of their own families. Weโ€™re excited about bringing the LAST WEEKEND family to a larger audience.โ€

Novelist Dolby and producer Williams attended high school and college together; they have been friends since they were seventeen years old. โ€œPatricia Clarksonโ€™s characterโ€™s revelations about parenthood are very much fueled by our own experiences with becoming parents,โ€ added Dolby and Williams, who were both facing early parenthood with their respective families when production started.

LAST WEEKEND is a co-production between Gran Via Productions, Greyshack Films, and Waterโ€™s End Productions. The film was executive produced by Mark Johnson (โ€œBreaking Badโ€) and produced by Mike S. Ryan (JUNEBUG). Rounding out the cast are Alexia Rasmussen, Rutina Wesley, Fran Kranz, Julie Carmen, Julio Oscar Mechoso, Sheila Kelley, Mary Kay Place and Judith Light.

The deal for the film was negotiated by Arianna Bocco, Senior Vice President of Acquisitions & Productions for Sundance Selects/IFC Films with Josh Braun of Submarine Entertainment on behalf of the filmmakers.

Sundance Selects is a sister label to IFC Films and IFC Midnight, and is owned and operated by AMC Networks Inc.

Press Release: AFI Docs Announces Opening and Closing Night Selections

AFI DOCS ANNOUNCES ‘HOLBROOK/TWAIN: AN AMERICAN ODYSSEY’ AND ‘LIFE ITSELF’ AS OPENING AND CLOSING NIGHT SELECTIONS

Actor Hal Holbrook Introduces the World Premiere as Opening Night America’s Movie Critic Roger Ebert is Celebrated as Closing Night

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE, May 15, 2014, WASHINGTON, DC โ€“ AFI DOCS Documentary Festival announced the World Premiere of HOLBROOK/TWAIN: AN AMERICAN ODYSSEY and LIFE ITSELF as the Opening and Closing Night films, respectively, for this year’s installment of the festival.

Actor Hal Holbrook will introduce the World Premiere and open AFI DOCS on June 18 at the Newseum. HOLBROOK/TWAIN: AN AMERICAN ODYSSEY, directed by Scott Teems, celebrates Holbrook, the renowned performer of the one-man show, “Mark Twain Tonight!” The film is an intimate portrait of the actor and the play he has performed continuously over the past six decades.

LIFE ITSELF, directed by Steve James (HOOP DREAMS), pays tribute to the beloved movie critic Roger Ebert. The film will be presented on June 21 at the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery.

“HOLBROOK/TWAIN and LIFE ITSELF invite audiences into the lives of two iconic individuals โ€“ Hal Holbrook and Roger Ebert,” said Christine O’Malley, AFI DOCS Interim Festival Director. “We are presenting their stories in landmark American venues dedicated to culture and history. We could not be more thrilled to bookend the festival with these exceptional films.”

For 60 consecutive years, Holbrook has been touring with his Tonyยฎ and Emmyยฎ Award-winning one-man show, “Mark Twain Tonight!,” in which he portrays the renowned American writer and satirist. It is regarded as the longest-running one-man show in the history of theater. In HOLBROOK/TWAIN: AN AMERICAN ODYSSEY, Teems (THAT EVENING SUN) takes audiences behind the scenes for an intimate peek at the actor’s life and to examine Mark Twain’s timeless influence in America.

“AFI DOCS is the ideal festival to premiere our film, because both Twain’s writings and Holbrook’s one-man masterpiece remain strikingly relevant and timely observations of this wonderful and conflicted country of ours,” said Teems. “The themes and ideas presented in our film align beautifully with AFI DOCS, and we couldn’t be happier to premiere the film in Washington, DC.”

James’ documentary about Ebert, LIFE ITSELF, is a complete look at one of the nation’s most influential film critics. Based on Ebert’s 2011 memoir of the same name, James paints a vivid portrait of the critic, whose genuine love of movies helped him remain a relevant voice in film even after his physical voice had been silenced from a devastating battle with cancer.

“We are thrilled to have our film selected as the Closing Night screening for AFI DOCS, a film festival with which I’ve had a long and wonderful relationship,” said James. “Roger loved documentaries and, as a critic, had a profound impact on the success of so many of them over the years. To be honored at one of the very best festivals devoted to the art form would have greatly pleased him.”

At AFI DOCS, screenings and discussions will continue to connect audiences, artists, issue experts, film subjects and policy leaders. Tickets will be available in June, and details will be announced in the coming weeks at AFIDOCS.com.

American Airlines is the official airline of AFI and a proud sponsor of the festival. The Washington Post is proud to be a major media sponsor of AFI DOCS.

Press Release: Mediant Chairman Manu Kumaran Discusses Studioplex

MEDIENT CHAIRMAN, MANU KUMARAN, DISCUSSES โ€˜STUDIOPLEXโ€™ VENTURE IN CANNES PRODUCTION FOR NORTH AMERICAโ€™S LARGEST MOVIE AND ELECTRONIC GAME PRODUCTION FACILITY WILL BEGIN IN 2015.

CANNES, MAY 15, 2014 โ€“ Medient Chairman, Manu Kumaran, spoke in detail today about his โ€˜STUDIOPLEXโ€™ venture at a media briefing in Cannes. Kumaranโ€™s ambitious build will house a unique, all-encompassing โ€˜live and workโ€™ environment that will produce a minimum of eight new films per year, with production scheduled to start at the facility in 2015.

Although Medient Studios operates in Effingham County, Savannah, GA, United States, its offices in Mumbai, London and Munich lay the foundation of Medientโ€™s original multi-international production company. Its management group, headed by Manu Kumaran, has been responsible for several hundred productions over the past two decades, applying their hands-on experience in developing, financing and producing films and games and utilising their expertise across corporate governance, physical production and studio management.

Once complete, STUDIOPLEX will be the largest movie and electronic game production facility in North America, providing the highest level of production competences by working in partnership with technology leaders to produce cutting edge, automated technologies that massively reduce set up and turnaround times. The publically held company will incorporate the simultaneous production of electronic gaming alongside corresponding theatrical titles, significantly reducing third party costs.

Medient Studios has acquired the 50 year old Munich-based sales agent, Atlas International. Atlas has a strong film library as well as production and international sales operations and will thus be grown as part of a fully integrated content creation and sales company. In doing so, Medient Studios will be a one-stop facility for independent producers.

Kumaranโ€™s strategic move to Savannah will allow the Studio to benefit from friendly tax regimes and will therefore capitalise on production subsidies available in Georgia. Manu added that, โ€˜production budgets should be reduced by a further circa 30% due to use of cutting edge technologies, environmentally sustainable work surroundings and stable crew costs, that will come hand – in – hand with our live and work environment.โ€™

He also added that STUDIOPLEX will be looking to compete fiscally for studio – sized tent pole production and that although operating under the Medient umbrella, Atlas International will continue to seek third party projects for its sales arm.

Once operational this production facility will be the largest of its kind in the United States.

About Manu Kumaran
Kumaran is a second-generation international film producer who has produced 19 feature films in four languages.

The oldest son of renowned Malayalam film director-producer K P Kumaran, he has been engaged in the film business from an early age, working primarily in production and distribution. Kumaran joined the Interpublic group agency Lintas in 1993 and quickly rose to become the youngest VP in the history of Indian advertising.

In 1998, he produced Bombay Boys, a movie that altered the landscape of Indian cinema forever. The film opened a new market for alternative cinema, bringing it into the mainstream.

In 2002, Kumaran established Medient and created ABOB, India’s first boy band. He later leveraged ABOBโ€™s success to produce Kiss Kis Ko (Who Gets the Kiss?), a film based on the band’s life. In 2008, he produced the award-winning Malayalam film akashagopuram (Castle in the Air), based on the Henrik Ibsen play Master Builder, which was the first Indian film to be entirely produced outside of that country. The film set a new benchmark in East-West collaboration within the industry.

The first Indian producer to successfully manage the migration to the West, Kumaran is an expert in film tax credits and incentives and has built a reputation for producing theatrical quality releases at minimal costs with strong net margins.

Press Release: APD’s Cinema Conservancy Presents “Stations of the Elevated”

APD’s CINEMA CONSERVANCY PRESENTS STATIONS OF THE ELEVATED

New restoration of Manfred Kirchheimer’s legendary NYC film to Premiere at BAMCinemaFest June 27, 2014

May 15th, 2014 (New York, NY) – APDโ€™s Cinema Conservancy program is thrilled to announce the upcoming release of Stations of the Elevated (1981), a 45-minute independent documentary directed, produced and edited by Manfred Kirchheimer, in a new restoration. Shot over the course of 1977 on lush 16mm color reversal stock, the film weaves together vivid images of elevated subway trains crisscrossing New York City’s gritty urban landscape. With a complex soundtrack that combines the ambient sounds of the city with the music of Charles Mingus and Aretha Franklin, the film is an impressionistic portrait of and tribute to a New York that has long since disappeared.

On Friday, June 27 BAMCinemaFest will present the world premiere of APD/Cinema Conservancyโ€™s new restoration of Stations of the Elevated on the Steinberg Screen at the BAM Harvey Theater. The event begins with a live performance by legendary jazz ensemble the Mingus Dynasty, the original Charles Mingus legacy band. The first band Sue Mingus organized after Charlesโ€™ death in 1979, this acclaimed orchestra continues to interpret Charles Mingusโ€™ more than 300 compositions, and will perform as a prelude to Kirchheimerโ€™s jazz-inflected documentary. Tickets go on sale May 14, 2014 here: http://www.bam.org/film/2014/bamcinemafest2014.

The newly restored version of the film will be released in theaters this fall accompanied by other works by Manfred Kirchheimer. The restoration process includes both re-mastered image and sound.

Director of Cinema Converancy Jake Perlin stated, โ€œI was hypnotized by Stations from the first time I saw the video cassette, just like the twenty plus times I have seen it since. When thinking of dream projects for Cinema Conservancy, it was at the top of the list. Working with Manny to be able to bring the film back to audiences in this beautiful version and have it premiere on the enormous screen in the Harvey, is thrilling!”

“In 1977 when Stations of the Elevated was filmed, illegal graffiti on New Yorkโ€™s subway trains was considered the scourge of the city. Mayors and passengers called it vandalism; attack dogs were let loose to scare and apprehend the perpetrators–kids with names and messages they wanted to ‘get up.’ Today, museums, advertisers and celebrities court the graffiti writers and display their work. With the careful HD restoration of the film, it lives again in all its blazing gloryโ€, said Manfred Kirchheimer.

Among the first-ever documentations of graffiti on film, Stations of the Elevated captures the height of the 1970s graffiti movement in New York, featuring the work of early legends including Lee, Fab 5 Freddy, Shadow, Daze, Kase, Butch, Blade, Slave, 12 T2B, Ree, and Pusher. In a period when the graffiti covering New Yorkโ€™s subway system was largely dismissed as vandalism, with mayor Ed Koch threatening “if I had my way I wouldn’t use dogs, but wolves [to keep writers out of the train yards],” Kirchheimer explored graffiti as a form of self-expression and a reaction to New Yorkโ€™s social and economic conditions, an artistic counterpoint to the โ€œlegalized vandalismโ€ dominating the cityโ€™s visual landscape in the form of corporate advertising. Juxtaposing the colorful imagery of โ€˜taggedโ€™ cars with shots of carefully hand-painted billboards depicting hamburgers and bikini-clad women, Stations of the Elevated forces audiences to ask: โ€œWhat is urban art, and what role does it play in the daily life of a city?โ€

The film premiered at the 1981 New York Film Festival, but lacking appropriate music licenses, Stations of the Elevated was never theatrically released in the United States. In the 30 years since its completion it has been rarely screened, developing a cult amongst cinephiles and jazz- and graffiti-lovers. After two years of working to secure appropriate licenses for its soundtrack, APD’s Cinema Conservancy program will finally make this crucial cultural document and cinematic experience available to the public in 2014 with a theatrical run.

Filmmaker Manfred Kirchheimer (b. 1931) immigrated to New York with his family as a child, escaping Nazi Germany to settle in Washington Heights. After studying at Hans Richter’s Institute of Film Techniques at the City College of New York, he spent many years working in the film industry while self-financing his own independent films. A long-time professor at the School of Visual Arts, Kirchheimer has documented New York with an observant, sympathetic eye for decades, in films including We Were So Beloved (1986), Claw (1968), Short Circuit (1973), Bridge High (1975) and Colossus on the River (1963).

Now, 33 years after itโ€™s initial release and coming back home, Stations of the Elevatedโ€™s new transfer can be seen with a fresh pair of eyes having its world premiere at BAMCinemaFest, Friday, June 27th at 8:00pm at the BAM Harvey Theater.

Details regarding the filmโ€™s theatrical re-release this fall will be announced in the coming months.

Cinema Conservancy is the releasing program of Artists Public Domain, a New York-based non-profit production and distribution company. Cinema Conservancy helps to ensure the legacy and public availability of crucial works of American Independent cinema. Previous Cinema Conservancy releases include Jamel Shabazz Street Photographer, the John Hubley Centennial, Nothing But a Man, Little Fugitive, Northern Lights and The Color Wheel. APDโ€™s recent productions include Towheads, Another Earth, and The Forgiveness of Blood.

Press Release: Magnolia Acquies U.S. Rights to “Life Partners”

MAGNOLIA ACQUIRES US RIGHTS TO LIFE PARTNERS FROM RED CROWN PRODUCTIONS

New York (May 16, 2014) โ€“ The Wagner/Cuban Companyโ€™s Magnolia Pictures has acquired the US rights for Susanna Fogelโ€™s LIFE PARTNERS following its World Premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival. The film, from Red Crown Productions and Haven Entertainment, stars Leighton Meester (Gossip Girl), Gillian Jacobs (Community), Adam Brody (Some Girl(s), The O.C.) and Gabourey Sidibe (Precious, American Horror Story: Coven). LIFE PARTNERS was written by Susanna Fogel and Joni Lefkowitz, whose other collaborations include the series Chasing Life and the pilot Washingtonienne, and came out of the Sundance Screenwriters Lab.

Straight Paige (Jacobs) and lesbian Sasha (Meester) are codependent best friends in their late 20s who have spent the last ten years acting more like wives than friends: they talk to each other on the toilet; they drive each other to the doctor. And as with any good marriage, theyโ€™re a perfect yin and yang. Until the night Paige meets TIM (Brody). Despite some superficial drawbacks (questionable facial hair, a penchant for quoting the movies everyone quotes), heโ€™s the kind of guy you marry. As Paige and Timโ€™s relationship grows, the bond between Paige and Sasha inevitably shifts. Suddenly without a โ€œpartner,โ€ Sasha is left to examine her own shortcomings and panic about her impending 30th birthday. Passive-aggressive conflict brews in their friendship until the girls must finally confront the question theyโ€™ve been avoiding: can their friendship survive growing up?

“It has been such a privilege to work with Red Crown in making Life Partners, a film that we are all so proud of,โ€ said producer Jordana Mollick. โ€œWe are thrilled that Magnolia shares our passion and are excited to join such a dynamic team on the release of the movie.”
