Every week, I get several press releases, screening invitations and other notifications from a handful of studio contacts. While I won’t be sharing any information regarding my screening invites, some of the press releases might be of interest to my readers, so I thought I’d start sharing them in toto with all of you. These could include new image galleries for various films or important updates to upcoming releases from various smaller studios and art house production companies.

Press Release: ‘Divergent’ Adaptation Casts Theo James

THEO JAMES TO STAR AS โ€œFOURโ€ IN SUMMIT ENTERTAINMENTโ€™S FUTURISTIC ACTION ADVENTURE DIVERGENT

Fans Eagerly Await the March 21, 2014 North American Release of the Filmed Adaptation of Veronica Rothโ€™s New York Times Best Selling Novel

Santa Monica, CA March 15, 2013 โ€“ Summit Entertainment, a LIONSGATEยฎ (NYSE: LGF) company, announced today that Theo James (Downton Abbey, UNDERWORLD: AWAKENING) will star as โ€œFourโ€ opposite Golden Globe nominated Shailene Woodley (THE DESCENDANTS, THE SPECTACULAR NOW) in the highly anticipated feature film production DIVERGENT. The futuristic action adventure, based on author Veronica Rothโ€™s New York Times best seller, will be directed by Neil Burger (LIMITLESS, THE ILLUSIONIST) from a script by Vanessa Taylor and commences principal photography this April in Chicago. The original draft of the script was written by Evan Daugherty. Doug Wick and Lucy Fisher are producing the project via their Red Wagon Entertainment banner (THE GREAT GATSBY) along with Pouya Shahbazian. Red Wagonโ€™s Rachel Shane is executive producing. Summit will release the film theatrically in North America in THE HUNGER GAMES slot on Friday, March 21, 2014.

DIVERGENT is a thrilling adventure set in a future world where people are divided into distinct factions based on their personalities, Tris Prior (Woodley) is warned she is Divergent and will never fit into any one group. When she discovers a conspiracy to destroy all Divergents, she must find out what makes being Divergent so dangerous before it’s too late.

A man with a mysterious past, Four is Trisโ€™s intense yet charismatic instructor and one of the leaders of the Dauntless faction.

In a joint statement, Rob Friedman and Patrick Wachsberger, Co-Chairmen of Lionsgate Motion Picture Group, said, โ€œTheo is not only an incredibly talented actor, he is also who we envisioned as Four when reading Veronicaโ€™s novel which has taken the world by storm. As we continue to develop the film, the studio remains committed to providing fans with a movie adaptation that stays as true to the book as possible and we are confident that we have done so with our selection of Shailene and Theo in the leading roles.โ€

โ€œWe took our time to find the right actor to fill the role of Four, and Theo is definitely the perfect fit,โ€ said Erik Feig, Lionsgate Motion Picture Groupโ€™s President of Production. โ€œVeronica has crafted a truly iconic character in Four and we cannot wait to begin production and bring him and this story to life for millions of fans around the world.โ€

The extremely popular young adult novel Divergent was written by first time author Veronica Roth and has topped the New York Times Best Sellers list ever since being published in May of 2011 by Katherine Tegen Books/HarperCollins Publishers. The book was written by Roth while she was earning her undergraduate degree at Northwestern University. She followed her first novel with the book Insurgent, which has also made its way to the #1 position on specific New York Times Best Sellers lists. To date, book sales are now over 2.6 million copies for both novels combined, and both titles are HarperCollins most successful e-books ever in regards to sales. The studio acquired the film rights to the novel in early 2011 several months before the book Divergent was published.

DIVERGENT marks another strategic foray for Summit into producing material for young adults, building on Summit and corporate parent Lionsgateโ€™s leadership in the young-adult genre. Summitโ€™s TWILIGHT SAGA franchise has grossed more than $3.3 billion at the worldwide box office, and the first film of Lionsgateโ€™s THE HUNGER GAMES franchise is the 13th highest-grossing North American release of all time.

James is represented by WME, and Markham, Froggatt & Irwin.

He was also Musical Director for 2012 Olympic Games and 2012 Paralympic Games in London. In a lively afternoon celebrating creativity and collaboration, Arnold and guests offer a first-hand look at the composing process โ€“ through conversation, clips and various demonstrations of his approach to film and the musical choices that have led to some of his most notable work.
Screenwriting Flash Lab โ€” It takes years of screenwriting to have an overnight success. It also takes talent, willpower, determination, grit and more than anything โ€“ it requires failure. And yet the fear of failure can stymy creativity. What is a writer to do? Join UK and American screenwriters for a lively, honest and irreverent discussion on the creative lessons learned from their biggest โ€œcock-upsโ€. A not-to-be-missed opportunity to meet fellow writers, as well as Sundance Instituteโ€™s Feature Film Program Founding Director, Michelle Satter, and International Director, Paul Federbush. Tony Grisoni (Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, Tideland, In This World, Death Defying Acts), Peter Straughan (Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy, The Debt, Men Who Stare at Goats), Lynn Shelton (Touchy Feely, Your Sisterโ€™s Sister, Humpday), moderator Mia Bays, Oscar-winning producer (Six Shooter, 30 Century Man) and marketing consultant / creative executive at Microwave, and other panelist to be announced. Co-presented with BAFTA.
Senses of Humor and Humour: US โ€“ UK Comedy โ€” As the wisest among us have often observed, humor is a serious thing. A strangely elusive form (E.B. White once likened it to dissecting a frog; you can do it, but the thing dies in the process) comedy may be dispensed with sugarcoated smoothness, but itโ€™s a uniquely powerful, sophisticated way of looking at the foibles of human nature and the contradictions of our lives and societies. From family dysfunction to global politics, comedians might argue that laughing at the world is simply the most sensible way of making sense of it. In a battle to establish who is funnier and why, our group of UK and US actors, comedians and filmmakers unpeel the layers and explore whatโ€™s behind the American and British โ€œbrandsโ€ of humor. With comedian, author and filmmaker Mike Birbiglia (Sleepwalk With Me), writer, director and actress Lake Bell (In A Worldโ€ฆ) and other panelists to be announced. Co-presented with BFI.

THE RELUCTANT FUNDAMENTALIST

April 26th, 2013

Directed by Mira Nair

Starring Riz Ahmed, Liev Schreiber, Kiefer Sutherland and Kate Hudson

From Award-winning director Mira Nair, and based on the acclaimed novel by Moshin Hamid, comes the explosive new film, The Reluctant Fundamentalist. In 2010, as student demonstrations rage in Lahore, a young Pakistani professor Changez Khan (Riz Ahmed) is interviewed by American journalist Bobby Lincoln (Liev Schreiber). Princeton-educated Changez tells Lincoln of his past as a brilliant business analyst on Wall Street. He talks of the glittering future that lay before him, his mentor, Jim Cross (Kiefer Sutherland), and the beautiful and sophisticated Erica (Kate Hudson), with whom he was set to share that future.

In the aftermath of 9/11, the alienation and suspicion he is suddenly met with leads him back to his homeland, and the family to whom he is very close. Charisma and intelligence catapult him to become a leader both in the eyes of the Pakistani students that adore him, and the American government that suspects him.

The collegial pretense of the meeting in a Lahore tea house, between Lincoln and Changez, slowly gives way to why the unlikely pair is meeting on a summer dayโ€”a foreign professor has been kidnapped by extremists, and the clock is ticking toward the deadline for his execution. Changez’s family is being harassed and is in real danger. Bobby listens carefully, but with an agenda of his own. Leading us through the culturally rich and beguiling worlds of New York, Lahore and Istanbul, The Reluctant Fundamentalist is an exploration of bias and the phenomenon of globalization that is both brilliant and unsettling.
