The Online Film Critics Society, one of the largest film critics organizations in the world, have declared The Tree of Life not only Best Picture, but winner of four other awards (the most confusing of which is Best Editing, an award the film certainly shouldn’t have won considering how plodding it tends to be). While a lot of the choices were pretty standard at the top of the ballot, their selection of winners in the screenwriting categories are most noteworthy. Midnight in Paris hasn’t been winning many prizes, but Woody Allen’s film won the award for Original Screenplay while Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy claimed Best Adapted Screenplay a surprise, but welcome selection. The group isn’t too prescient for picking winners (Supporting Actor is the best with four of five winners taking the Oscar), but Actor, Supporting Actor, Supporting Actress and Original Screenplay winners frequently go on to Oscar nominations, which seems fairly on target at this point, though Chastain may not make it in the race for this particular performance.
In addition to the nominees and/or winners listed below, this year, we’re giving you a quick background on each individual precursor including founding year, first awards year and a glimpse at how many predictions the group has gotten right in the last five years. This data can be found below.
