We had one film release this past weekend with the potential for Oscar nominations.

Ready Player One

Steven Spielberg’s ability to score Oscar nominations is legendary, but his genre films of late have struggled in this regard. Hook in 1991 was the last genre film he made that scored more than three nominations. You have to go back to 1982 and E.T. to find the last genre film he made that managed to score above-the-line citations. Jurassic Park in 1993 was the last of these types of films to win any Oscars at all.

All of this is to say that Ready Player One faces an uphill battle at the Oscars. While Visual Effects seems like a safe bet for a nomination, other categories are going to be a struggle. First of all, reviews aren’t strong enough to propel it into the major categories, leaving the movie to fight for nominations below-the-line. Among the categories where it could compete, there are only four with realistic chances of nominations. Production Design is a category that has been more frequently citing CGI-created worlds for its award. Spielberg has had plenty of mentions in the category and although this seems like the weakest of the film’s possibilities, it’s still there.

Sound Mixing and Sound Editing used to go hand-in-hand with Visual Effects, but in the last two decades, the categories have been less aligned than they used to be. Still, There is plenty of music and effects to go around and I wouldn’t be surprised to see this film pick up nods in both sound categories in addition to Visual Effects.
