This is it! The last week of the Oscar season. Unlucky week 13. The Academy Awards will be aired live this coming Sunday. There are only two precursors left, the Costume Designers Guild and the Spirit Awards. This past weekend saw four different guild precursors working to establish their place in the Oscar season. The two sound guilds, the editors and the writers have all announced and these are what films won the week.
But, before we get into this week’s winners and losers, let’s take a look at what’s coming up this week:
Week 13
Tuesday, Feb. 19 – Academy Awards Voting Ends
Tuesday, Feb. 19 – Costume Designers Guild
Saturday, Feb. 23 – Spirit Awards
Sunday, Feb. 24 – Academy Awards
Big Winners
Argo won the WGA award for Best Adapted Screenplay, a trophy the film was never though to be one of the major contenders for. With that victory, the film should be almost unstoppable for the Oscars this year.
Zero Dark Thirty took the Writers Guild of America prize for Best Original Screenplay. The victory is helpful in the film’s close competition with Quentin Tarantino for Django Unchained, which was ineligible for the WGA.
Skyfall needed a win from the Sound Editors to remain a competitor in its two sound categories and it did that taking the top prize for Sound Effects. Although it didn’t win any other award, it might be enough to show the film still has support among the guilds.
Life of Pi could be a spoiler in a number of creative categories where it wasn’t thought to previously compete. With two prizes from the Motion Picture Sound Editors, there is indeed love for the film that could spill over into several creative prizes at the Oscars not unlike Hugo.
Big Losers
Lincoln Lost the final award it could lose to become one of the biggest losers this season. All through the precursors, the film’s screenplay was seen as its strongest element and won several awards for that. Now that Argo took the prize instead, it’s clear there is a wide enough group of people who like Argo enough that the Oscar chances of Lincoln‘s screenplay may have just been kicked to the curb.
